Starter Motor: Service and Repair




Starter Motor - 2.0L GDI

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, REFER to Safety Warnings . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Removal

WARNING: Always disconnect the battery ground cable at the battery before disconnecting the starter motor battery terminal lead. If a tool is shorted at the starter motor battery terminal, the tool can quickly heat enough to cause a skin burn. Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. REFER to Lifting Points .

2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. REFER to Battery Disconnect .

3. Remove the 8 retainers and the underbody insulator.





4. Remove the starter solenoid wiring harness terminal nut.

5. Remove the starter solenoid battery cable terminal nut and position the starter motor terminal block aside.

6. Detach the EOP (Engine Oil Pressure) switch wiring harness retainer from the starter motor stud bolt.

7. Detach the 2 coolant hose and wiring harness position retainers from the support bracket.

8. Remove the 2 nuts and the coolant hose and wiring harness support bracket.

9. Remove the 2 starter motor stud bolts and the starter motor.

Installation

1. Position the starter motor and install the 2 stud bolts.
- Tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).

2. Position the coolant hose and wiring harness support bracket and install the 2 nuts.
- Tighten to 11 Nm (97 lb-in).

3. Attach the 2 coolant hose and wiring harness retainers to the support bracket.

4. Attach the EOP (Engine Oil Pressure) switch wiring harness retainer to the starter motor stud bolt.

5. Position the starter motor wiring terminal block onto the starter motor and install the starter motor solenoid battery cable terminal and the nut.
- Tighten to 12 Nm (106 lb-in).

6. Install the starter solenoid wiring harness terminal nut.
- Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).

7. Install the underbody insulator and the 8 retainers.





8. Connect the battery ground cable. REFER to Battery Disconnect .
