Attachment III - Technical Information
OVERVIEWThis program involves the inspection of the passenger side windshield wiper motor electrical connector for a missing seal plug. Based on the results of the inspection, dealers will perform one of the following service actions:
^ Seal Plug is Present: Install a redesigned seal plug on top of the original plug and release the vehicle.
^ Seal Plug is Missing: Inspect the electrical connector cavity, clean and grease as needed, install a redesigned seal plug, and ensure the wipers are functioning properly.
- If the wiper motors are functioning properly, release the vehicle.
- If the wiper motors are not functioning properly, contact the Special Service Support Center.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
When removing and installing the wiper arms, it is essential the ignition is in the ON position in order to "lock" the wiper motors in the parked position. Failure to ensure the ignition is in the ON position may result in misalignment of the wiper blades after installation.
NOTE:
The wiper arms must be installed or removed within five minutes of placing the ignition in the ON position as the vehicle will enter battery saver mode after five minutes and the motors will no longer remain "locked".
1. Place the ignition switch in the ON position and turn on the windshield wipers. After they cycle a few times, turn off the wipers so they will stop in the parked position. Leave the ignition in the ON position.
2. Mark the location of the wiper arms for reinstallation.
3. Remove the wiper arms and cowl panel grille. For additional information, refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 501-02.
^ Place the ignition in the OFF position after the wiper arms have been removed.
4. Disconnect the electrical connector from the wiper motor and inspect for seal plug. See Figure 1.
- If the seal plug is present, go to step 5.
- If the seal plug is missing, go to step 11.
SEAL PLUG IS PRESENT
5. Leaving the original seal in place, insert a redesigned seal plug on top of the original seal plug. Ensure the new seal plug is fully seated.
6. Connect the electrical connector to the wiper motor.
7. Install the cowl panel grille. For additional information, refer to WSM, Section 501-02.
NOTE:
When installing the wiper arms it is critical they be installed in the exact position they were removed in order to ensure they do not "clash" with each other.
8. Place the ignition in the ON position to "lock" the wiper motors and install the wiper arms.
9. Verify proper operation of the windshield wipers.
10. Return the vehicle to the customer.
SEAL PLUG IS MISSING
11. Remove the passenger side wiper motor. For additional information, refer to WSM, Section 501-16.
12. Inspect the wiper motor electrical connector cavity and terminals for contamination or corrosion. See Figure 2.
- If the connector cavity and terminals are not contaminated or corroded, proceed to step 13.
- If the connector cavity and terminals are contaminated or corroded, perform the following:
a. Clean the wiper motor electrical connector and terminals with electrical contact cleaner.
b. Clean the wire harness connector with electrical contact cleaner.
13. Using shop air, blow all moisture and debris from the wiper motor electrical connector cavity and the wire harness connector.
14. Apply electrical grease (XG-12) to the wire harness electrical connector See Figure 3.
15. Insert a redesigned seal plug into the connector. Ensure the seal plug is fully seated.
16. Install the passenger side wiper motor. For additional information, refer to WSM, Section 501-16.
17. Connect the electrical connector to the wiper motor.
18. Install the cowl panel grille. For additional information, refer to WSM, Section 501-02.
NOTE:
When installing the wiper arms it is critical they be installed in the exact position they were removed in order to ensure they do not "clash" with each other.
19. Place the ignition in the ON position to "lock" the wiper motors and install the wiper arms.
20. Verify proper operation of the windshield wipers.
- If the windshield wipers do not operate properly, call the Special Service Support Center (SSSC).
21. Return the vehicle to the customer.
