Removal
NOTICE: To prevent system failure, carry out the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset when a front passenger seat cushion is disassembled, a new trim cover is installed or an OCS (Occupant Classification System) service kit is installed. Use a scan tool to carry out the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset command.
NOTICE: The cushion heater mat on a front outboard passenger seat is not serviced separately. If a new cushion heater mat is needed on the front passenger seat, install an OCS (Occupant Classification System) service kit equipped with a heater mat. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect operation of the OCS (Occupant Classification System).
1. Remove the passenger seat. REFER to Seat .
2. Remove the recliner cover.
1. Detach the safety belt buckle wire from the recliner cover.
2. Remove the screw at the rear.
3. Pull out on the recliner cover at the rear to disengage the locator pin.
4. Pull down and out at the lower front of the recliner cover to disengage the retainer.
5. Lift and remove the recliner cover.
3. Remove the screw and recliner handle.
4. Remove the cushion side shield.
1. Remove the screw at the rear.
2. Pull out to the side on the rear of the cushion side shield to disengage the locator pin.
3. Slide the cushion side shield forward to disengage the brackets and remove the cushion side shield.
5. If equipped, disconnect the heated seat electrical connector and detach any wire harness retainers.
6. NOTICE: Using excessive force when bending the bracket can damage the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor housing.
NOTE: Typical early build OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor and bracket shown, others similar.
For early build, separate the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor from the bracket in the following sequence.
1. Disconnect the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor electrical connector.
2. Slide an appropriate tool in the slot between the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor and bracket.
3. Carefully lift the tool end to bend the bracket tab and slide the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor off the bracket.
7. For late build
8. Detach all the cushion cover retainers attached to the seat track and cushion frame.
- If equipped with an OE (Original Equipment) OCS (Occupant Classification System), remove the cushion foam pad and cushion cover.
9. NOTE: Typical seat shown, others similar.
Detach the front pin-type retainers, lift the bladder and feed the OCS (Occupant Classification System) hose and sensor out from between the seat cushion support wires.
10. Remove the cushion cover from the cushion foam pad.
Installation
1. NOTE: Typical early build bracket tab shown.
For early build, bend the bracket tab away from the seat.
2. NOTICE: Inspect the OCS (Occupant Classification System) bladder, seat cushion pan and support assembly for any foreign objects before installing the OCS (Occupant Classification System) to the seat cushion pan. Remove any foreign objects found. Failure to follow these instructions may result in incorrect operation of the OCS (Occupant Classification System) and may cause system failure.
Inspect the OCS (Occupant Classification System) bladder, seat cushion pan and support assembly for any foreign objects before installing the OCS (Occupant Classification System) to the seat cushion pan. Remove any foreign objects found.
3. NOTICE: Do not trap the pressure sensor hose incorrectly over the seat's suspension or spring. Route the hose so that it lays in a natural bend, and is not twisted due to being forced into an unnatural position. Failure to follow these instructions may result in component damage and/or system failure.
Route the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor and hose through the correct opening of the seat cushion suspension wires.
4. Position the OCS (Occupant Classification System) and install the front pin-type retainers.
5. For early build, slide the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor onto the bracket and connect the electrical connector.
- Make sure the OCS (Occupant Classification System) sensor is securely installed.
6. For late build
7. For an OE (Original Equipment) OCS (Occupant Classification System), position the cushion foam pad on the seat track.
8. If equipped, connect the heated seat electrical connector and attach any wire harness retainers.
9. Install the cushion cover onto the cushion foam pad.
10. Attach all the cushion cover retainers to the seat track and cushion frame.
11. Install the cushion side shield and screw.
12. Install the recliner handle and screw.
13. Install the recliner cover, the screw and attach the safety belt buckle wire.
14. Install the passenger seat. REFER to Seat .Do not prove out the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) at this time.
15. WARNING: OCS (Occupant Classification System) parts are calibrated as an assembly and must only be replaced in the configuration they are sold. Never separate parts of an assembly. Failure to follow this instruction may result in incorrect operation of the OCS (Occupant Classification System) and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
WARNING: Make sure the front passenger seat repair is complete, the seat and all attached components (head restraint, seat side shield, etc.) are correctly assembled, and the seat is correctly installed to the vehicle before using System Reset to rezero the seat weight. Failure to follow these instructions may result in incorrect operation of the OCS (Occupant Classification System) and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.
NOTICE: To prevent system failure, take the following precautions before carrying out the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset:
- Make sure the voltage to the OCSM (Occupant Classification System Module) is greater than 8 volts and less than 18 volts.
- Make sure the OCS (Occupant Classification System) is not below 6°C (42.8°F) or above 36°C (96.7°F) when initiating the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset process. If the vehicle has been exposed to extreme cold or hot temperatures, the vehicle must be exposed and kept at a temperature between 6°C (42.8°F) to 36°C (96.7°F) for a minimum of 30 minutes.
- Make sure nothing is present on the passenger seat before and during the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset process.
- Prior to carrying out the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset, make sure a minimum of 8 seconds has elapsed after cycling the ignition switch on.
Using a scan tool, carry out the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset.
16. If the first system reset attempt was unsuccessful, carry out a thorough visual inspection of the following and repair any concerns found.
- OCS (Occupant Classification System) connector and wiring for damage
- Pressure sensor hose for kinks and/or damage
- Seat-related wiring harness and body wiring harness terminals and connectors for damage
17. NOTE: Cycle the ignition switch after the OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset.
Carry out a second OCS (Occupant Classification System) reset. If the second attempt is unsuccessful, install a new OCS (Occupant Classification System) service kit.
18. Prove out the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System): Turn the ignition from ON to OFF. Wait 10 seconds, then turn the ignition back to ON and monitor the air bag warning indicator with the air bag modules installed. The air bag warning indicator illuminates continuously for approximately 6 seconds and then turns off. If a SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) fault is present, the air bag warning indicator will:
- fail to light.
- remain lit continuously.
- flash.
The flashing might not occur until approximately 30 seconds after the ignition has been turned from OFF to ON. This is the time required for the RCM (Restraints Control Module) to complete the testing of the SRS (Supplemental Restraint System). If the air bag warning indicator is inoperative and a SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) fault exists, a chime sounds in a pattern of 5 sets of 5 beeps. If this occurs, diagnose and repair the air bag warning indicator and any SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) faults.
