Side Air Bag Module

WARNING: Before beginning any service procedure, REFER to Safety Warnings . Failure to follow this instruction may result in serious personal injury.

Removal

WARNING: Always carry or place a live air bag module with the air bag and deployment door/trim cover/tear seam pointed away from the body. Do not set a live air bag module down with the deployment door/trim cover/tear seam face down. Failure to follow these instructions may result in serious personal injury in the event of an accidental deployment.

WARNING: Never probe the electrical connectors on air bag, Safety Canopy(R) or side air curtain modules. Failure to follow this instruction may result in the accidental deployment of these modules, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death.

WARNING: Front seat backrest trim covers installed on seats equipped with seat side air bags cannot be repaired. A new trim cover must be installed. Cleaning is permissible. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

NOTE: If a side air bag deployment took place, install a new seat backrest foam pad, backrest cover, deployment chute and side air bag module and nuts. Replace the seat backrest frame if necessary. REFER to Seating - 1st Row for additional information concerning the installation of a new side air bag.

NOTE: The air bag warning indicator illuminates when the correct RCM (Restraints Control Module) fuse is removed and the ignition is on.

NOTE: The SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) must be fully operational and free of faults before releasing the vehicle to the customer.

1. Remove the front seat. REFER to Seat .

2. Disengage the 2 backrest cover elastic strap retainers attached to the bottom of the seat.

- If equipped, disconnect the heated seat mat electrical connector and detach the wire harness retainers.






3. If equipped, push the backrest cover and foam pad in, release the 2 tabs and remove the manual lumbar handle.





4. Detach the backrest cover retainers from the bottom rear of the backrest frame.

- If equipped, route the backrest heater mat wire harness out from the backrest cover.

5. Separate the backrest cover hook-and-loop strips from the backrest foam pad, invert the backrest cover up and detach the 3 J-clip retainers.





6. Using a small screwdriver, slide and release the locking button then disconnect the side air bag module electrical connector.





7. Remove the 2 side air bag module nuts and separate the side air bag module from the backrest frame.

Installation

1. WARNING: If the seat side air bag cover has been damaged or separated from its mounting, or if the air bag material has been exposed, install a new seat side air bag module. Never try to repair the seat side air bag module. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag deploying incorrectly, which increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

WARNING: Inspect the seat side air bag module and mounting surfaces for any damage or foreign material before installing the seat side air bag module. If any damage is found, install new components. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increase the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

WARNING: Inspect the seat side air bag module cavity in the seat backrest foam pad for any foreign material. If any foreign material is found, remove it. Failure to follow these instructions may result in the seat side air bag module deploying incorrectly and increases the risk of serious personal injury or death in a crash.

Position the 2 side air bag module studs through the backrest frame and install the 2 side air bag module nuts.
- Tighten to 7.5 Nm (66 lb-in).

2. Connect the side air bag module electrical connector and engage the locking button.

3. Attach the 3 J-clip retainers, roll the backrest cover down and attach backrest cover hook-and-loop strips.

4. Attach the backrest cover retainers to the bottom rear of the backrest frame.

- If equipped, route the backrest heater mat wire harness through the backrest cover.

5. If equipped, install the manual lumbar handle.

6. Engage the 2 backrest cover elastic strap retainers to the bottom of the seat.

- If equipped, connect the heated seat mat electrical connector and attach the wire harness retainers.

7. Install the front seat. REFER to Seat .
