Diagnostic Overview

Incorrect Tachometer Indication

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to Tachometer .

If the engine RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) message is missing or invalid for 1 second or less, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) defaults the tachometer to the last setting, based upon the last good message received, and the gauge can appear to freeze or become erratic.

Pinpoint Test

1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

2. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) self-test.

Are any DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?

3. CHECK THE TACHOMETER OPERATION USING THE DEALER TEST MODE

1. Ignition ON.

2. Monitor the tachometer.

3. Ignition OFF.

4. Enter the Dealer Test Mode. REFER to Dealer Test Mode .

5. Scroll to gauge sweep.

6. Monitor the tachometer when the gauge sweep initiates.

Does the tachometer start at 0 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute), move to 8,000 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) and return to 0 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute)?

4. CHECK THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) PID (Parameter Identification)

1. Using a scan tool, view the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) engine RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Monitor the tachometer while operating the engine at 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 and 2,500 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) using the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) active command PID (Parameter Identification) (RPM) to set the vehicle speed.

Does the tachometer indication range between 980-1,020 at 1,000 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute), 1,470-1,580 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) at 1,500 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute), 1,940-2,040 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) at 2,000 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) and 2,450-2,550 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute) at 2,500 RPM (Revolutions Per Minute)?
