AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAK FROM
CLUTCH HOUSING

FORD:
2011-2012 Fiesta

This article supersedes TSB 11-6-8 and 10-25-2 to consolidate previously released information, update vehicle model years and remove the production fix date.

ISSUE
Some 2011-2012 Fiesta vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission may exhibit a transmission fluid leak from the clutch housing.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the base of the transaxle clutch housing for evidence of a transmission fluid leak. Transmission fluid will be slick verses sticky.

a. Fluid leak is slick, proceed to Step 2.

b. If fluid is sticky and honey-colored, it may be mistaken for engine oil or transmission lubricant. This condition may be caused by excessive rust inhibitor applied to the flywheel during manufacturing. Wipe clean the rust inhibitor from the transmission housing with Motorcraft(R) Metal Brake Parts Cleaner or equivalent.

2. Is transmission fluid present at the base of the clutch housing?

a. Yes - Proceed to Step 3.

b. No - This article does not apply, refer to refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 307-11 for normal diagnostics.

3. Remove the transaxle assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.

4. Remove the dual clutch assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.

5. Replace both the inner input shaft seal located between both input shafts and the hollow input shaft seal to transmission clutch housing. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11 removal and installation section for inner input shaft seal and outer input shaft seal.

6. Check vehicle build date and install Dual Clutch Assembly Kit for appropriate vehicle build date. Follow instructions provided in the kit.

a. The Dual Clutch Assembly Kit for vehicles built on or before 1/12/2011:

(1) Contain a new engagement bearing and must be used with the new clutch.

(2) Requires reprogramming the powertrain control module (PCM) and transmission control module (TCM) to the latest calibration to be performed.

NOTE
DUAL CLUTCH SELF ADJUSTER LOCKS MUST BE RELEASED BEFORE TRANSMISSION IS INSTALLED OR DUAL CLUTCH WILL NOT OPERATE.

7. Install the new dual clutch assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.

8. Reinstall the transaxle assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 307-11.

9. Reprogram the PCM and TCM to the latest calibration level using IDS release 71.06 and higher or 72.01 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2011.3 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.

NOTE
THE PCM AND TCM ARE A MATCHED SET. PROGRAMMING THE PCM WILL AUTOMATICALLY UPDATE THE TCM.

NOTE
SOME VEHICLES MAY ALREADY BE AT THE LATEST LEVEL CALIBRATION.

10. Using IDS:

^ Select Powertrain

^ Select Transmission

^ Select Clutch System Test

^ Complete Test Procedure

11. Using IDS

^ Select Powertrain

^ Select Transmission Select Transmission Adaptive Learning

Perform each of the following:

a. Transmission Range Sensor Adaptive Learning

b. Shift Drum Adaptive Learning

c. Clutch Adaptive Learning

d. Exit

12. Perform Adaptive Drive Cycle. Refer to WSM, section 307-11.

NOTE
FAILURE TO PERFORM ALL STEPS OF THE ADAPTIVE LEARNING ROUTINES AND THE DRIVE CYCLE MAY RESULT IN ERRATIC SHIFTS AND DRIVEABILITY CONCERNS.
