PTU FLUID LEAK - VENT AREA

ISSUE
Some 2010 Taurus SHO vehicles with all wheel drive (AWD) may have a fluid leak from the power transfer unit (PTU) vent. There is a service kit available to modify the vent system on the PTU to eliminate the leak condition.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Inspect the PTU for a leak, if leaking from the PTU vent area, Install the vent kit on the PTU. This will replace the jiggle cap type vent with a vent tube assembly.
1. Remove PTU from vehicle. Refer to the Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 308-07.
2. Clean expelled PTU lubricant from PTU exterior. Take care not to get cleaner into the PTU.
3. Replace PTU intermediate shaft seal, alignment washer and deflector. Refer to the WSM, Section 308-07.
4. Remove PTU jiggle cap vent.
5. Install/press the vent fitting into the vacated vent opening of the PTU with barb end pointed up. Seat fitting fully into the PTU.
6. Press open end of vent line assembly onto the barb of the new vent fitting.
7. Reinstall PTU. Refer to the WSM, Section 308-07. Vent line is to be placed temporarily above PTU with intention to route to the brake reservoir area when vehicle is lowered on the hoist.
8. Fill PTU with fluid. Refer to the WSM, Section 308-07.
9. With the vehicle lowered, route the vent hose up to the power brake booster aspirator hose near the brake fluid reservoir. Secure the vent end to the lines as shown using tie strap. Be sure that hood will not contact the vent when closed. (Figure 1)
