Pinpoint Tests

Pinpoint Test AD: No Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) Communication, All Modules Are Not Responding

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 14, Module Communications Network for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

The Medium Speed Controller Area Network (MS-CAN) uses an unshielded twisted pair cable.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM) (if equipped)
- Audio Control Module (ACM)
- Audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module (if equipped)
- Driver Door Module (DDM) (if equipped)
- Driver Seat Module (DSM) (if equipped)
- Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM) (if equipped)
- Front Controls Interface Module (FCIM)
- Front Display Interface Module (FDIM)
- Global Positioning System Module (GPSM) (if equipped)
- Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2) (if equipped)
- HVAC module (if equipped)
- Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM) (if equipped)
- Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) (gateway module)
- Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module (if equipped)
- Smart Junction Box (SJB)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) (if equipped)
- Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) (if equipped)



PINPOINT TEST AD: NO MS-CAN COMMUNICATION, ALL MODULES ARE NOT RESPONDING

NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

NOTE: Most faults are due to connector and/or wiring concerns. Carry out a thorough inspection and verification before proceeding with the pinpoint test. Inspection and Verification

NOTE: Failure to disconnect the battery when instructed will result in false resistance readings. Refer to Battery.

AD18 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE GPSM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: GPSM C2398 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD19.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD64.

AD19 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE IPC DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) C220 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
If the vehicle is equipped with an Interior Lighting Control Module (ILCM), GO to AD20.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an ILCM, GO to AD21.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD65.

AD20 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE ILCM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: ILCM C2392 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD21.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD66.

AD21 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DSM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Seat Module (DSM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with a DSM?

Yes
GO to AD22.

No
GO to AD23.

AD22 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DSM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: DSM C341d .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD23.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD67.

AD23 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DCSM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Dual Climate Controlled Seat Module (DCSM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with a DCSM?

Yes
GO to AD24.

No
GO to AD25.

AD24 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DCSM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: DCSM C3265c .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD25.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD68.

AD25 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - APIM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with an Accessory Protocol Interface Module (APIM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with an APIM?

Yes
GO to AD26.

No
GO to AD27.

AD26 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE APIM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: APIM C3342 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD27.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD69.

AD27 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - DDM


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Driver Door Module (DDM).
- Is the vehicle equipped with a DDM?

Yes
GO to AD28.

No
GO to AD29.

AD28 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE DDM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: DDM C501b .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD29.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD70.

AD29 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - HCM-2


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with a Headlamp Control Module 2 (HCM-2).
- Is the vehicle equipped with an HCM-2?

Yes
GO to AD30.

No
GO to AD31.

AD30 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE HCM-2 DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: HCM-2 Inline C913 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD31.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD71.

AD31 VERIFY VEHICLE EQUIPMENT - SIDE OBSTACLE DETECTION


- Verify whether the vehicle is equipped with side obstacle detection.
- Is the vehicle equipped with side obstacle detection?

Yes
GO to AD32.

No
REPAIR the circuits. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

AD32 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-L DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Left (SOD-L) C4369 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to AD33.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD72.

AD33 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TOGETHER WITH THE SOD-R DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Side Obstacle Detection Control Module - Right (SOD-R) C4370 .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side.




- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
REPAIR the circuit. CONNECT all modules. CONNECT the negative battery cable. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the network test with the scan tool.

No
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD73.

AD34 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE SJB DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: SJB C2280b .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD57.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with a Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module, GO to AD35.

If the vehicle is not equipped with a RFA module, GO to AD36.

AD35 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE RFA MODULE DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: RFA Module C2153d .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD58.

No
GO to AD36.

AD36 CHECK THE MS-CAN (+) AND MS-CAN (-) CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND WITH THE ACM DISCONNECTED


- Disconnect: Audio Control Module (ACM) C240c .
- Measure the resistance between the DLC C251-3, circuit VDB06 (GY/OG), harness side and ground; and between the DLC C251-11, circuit VDB07 (VT/OG), harness side and ground.




- Are the resistances greater than 1,000 ohms?

Yes
CONNECT the negative battery cable. GO to AD59.

No
If the vehicle is equipped with an audio Digital Signal Processing (DSP) module, GO to AD37.

If the vehicle is not equipped with an audio DSP module, GO to AD38.
