Normal Operation
The Smart Junction Box (SJB) sends voltage signals to the multifunction switch to monitor the high beam and flash-to-pass requests. When the multifunction switch is placed in the FLASH-TO-PASS or HIGH BEAM position, the voltage signal is routed to ground. When the SJB detects a request for high beams (when the low beams are on) or flash-to-pass, the SJB energizes the high beam relay (integrated into the SJB), which supplies voltage to the high beam output circuit.
For vehicles not equipped with Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), the SJB high beam output circuit is routed directly to the headlamps.
For vehicles equipped with DRL, the SJB high beam output circuit is routed to the coil of the DRL relay 2 (located in the Battery Junction Box (BJB)). The DRL relay 2 then energizes and supplies voltage to the headlamps for the high beam shutters.
The high beam circuit to the headlamps only supplies voltage to activate the high beam shutters within the headlamp assemblies. If the high beam circuit to the headlamps is supplied voltage when the headlamps are not on, the shutters activate but the headlamps do not illuminate.
DRL Feature
When the DRL feature is active, the SJB provides voltage to energize the DRL relay 1 coil and voltage to the DRL relay 2 switched side.
Voltage passes through the DRL relay 2 (not energized) to the high beam circuit to activate the headlamp high beam shutters.
When the DRL relay 1 is not energized, ground for the LH headlamp passes through the DRL relay 1. When the DRL relay 1 energizes, ground is removed and the DRL relay 1 provides voltage to the LH headlamp ground circuit. The voltage passes through the LH headlamp and on to the LH headlamp relay (the LH and RH headlamp relays are not energized when the DRL feature is active). The voltage passes through the LH headlamp relay and is routed to the RH headlamp relay. The voltage continues through the RH headlamp relay to the RH headlamp bulb and then on to ground which completes the circuit.
Providing voltage to the headlamps in series (routing voltage first through the LH headlamp and then through the RH headlamp) creates the effect of illuminating the bulbs at a reduced intensity.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- DRL relay 2
- Multifunction switch
- Headlamp assembly
- SJB
PINPOINT TEST F: THE HIGH BEAM(S) ARE ALWAYS ON
NOTICE: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

F1 CHECK FOR DTC B1510 OR DTC B2A23
- Ignition OFF.
- Review the DTCs retrieved from the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1510 or DTC B2A23 present?
Yes
GO to F2.
No
If not equipped with DRL, GO to F4.
If equipped with DRL, GO to F6.

F2 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH
- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202.
- Ignition ON.
- Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: SJB Self-Test.
- Repeat the SJB self-test.
- Is DTC B1510 or DTC B2A23 present?
Yes
GO to F3.
No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

F3 CHECK THE HIGH BEAM AND FLASH-TO-PASS REQUEST INPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND
- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280b.
- Measure the resistance between the multifunction switch C202-6, circuit CLF17 (WH/OG), harness side and ground; and between the multifunction switch C202-4, circuit CLF27 (GN/BN), harness side and ground.
- Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?
Yes
GO to F10.
No
REPAIR the circuit in question for a short to ground. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.

F4 DETERMINE IF BOTH HIGH BEAMS ARE ILLUMINATED
- Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
- Ignition ON.
- Is only one high beam illuminated?
Yes
INSTALL a new headlamp assembly for the one in question. REFER to Headlamp Assembly Service and Repair. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to F5.

F5 CHECK THE HIGH BEAM VOLTAGE CIRCUIT TO THE HEADLAMPS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect: LH Headlamp.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280e.
- Ignition ON.
- For vehicles with halogen headlamps, measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021-4, circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and ground.
- For vehicles with HID headlamps, measure the voltage between the LH headlamp C1021-10, circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), harness side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR circuit CLF08 (YE/VT) for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to F10.

F6 CHECK THE DRL SYSTEM AS THE CAUSE OF THE CONCERN
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Ignition ON.
- Do the headlamps continue to illuminate?
Yes
GO to Pinpoint Test X Testing and Inspection.
No
GO to F7.

F7 ELIMINATE THE DRL SYSTEM AS THE CAUSE OF THE CONCERN
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Select DRIVE.
- Does the LH headlamp illuminate and the RH headlamp turn off?
Yes
REPAIR circuit SBB16 (VT/RD) for a short to ground between the headlamp relays. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to F8.

F8 CHECK THE DRL RELAY
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect: DRL Relay 2.
- Install a known good relay.
- Place the headlamp switch in the HEADLAMPS ON position.
- Ignition ON.
- Do the high beams continue to illuminate?
Yes
REMOVE the known good relay. GO to F9.
No
REMOVE the known good relay. INSTALL a new DRL relay 2. TEST the system for normal operation.

F9 CHECK THE SJB HIGH BEAM OUTPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE
- Ignition OFF.
- Place the headlamp switch in the OFF position.
- Disconnect: SJB C2280e.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between the DRL relay 2 pin 1, circuit CLF08 (YE/VT), BJB face side and ground.
- Is any voltage present?
Yes
REPAIR circuit CLF08 (YE/VT) between the DRL relay 2 and the SJB for a short to voltage. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
GO to F10.

F10 CHECK FOR CORRECT SJB OPERATION
- Disconnect all the SJB connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the SJB connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?
Yes
INSTALL a new SJB. REFER to Body Control Systems. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
