Pinpoint Test R: The Vehicle Does Not Start
Normal Operation
During each vehicle start sequence, when the start/stop button is pressed, the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module requests all 3 passive start antennas to send out a low frequency query, to determine if there are any Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Intelligent Access (IA) key(s) in the vehicle. If there are any IA key(s) in the vehicle (and the IA key battery is of sufficient capacity), it sends a high frequency signal to the Remote Functions Receiver (RFR) module. The RFR module sends the keycode(s) it received from the IA key(s) in a signal over hardwired circuits to the RFA module. The RFA module determines if the keycode(s) is correct and if a minimum of one keycode is correct, the RFA module sends an OK-to-start signal to the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN).
If the IA key is in the backup slot, and no IA keys have responded to the RFR module, the backup transceiver pulls the keycode from the IA key and sends it to the RFA module. If the RFA module determines the keycode is correct, the RFA module sends an OK-to-start signal to the PCM over the HS-CAN. Once the PCM receives an OK-to-start signal from the RFA module, the PCM grounds the starter relay solenoid coil, closing the starter relay, which provides power to the starter. Refer to Starting System.
This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Starting system concern
- Driveability concern
- PATS concern
PINPOINT TEST R: THE VEHICLE DOES NOT START
NOTE: If the entry portion of the IA system is inoperative, the battery in the IA key may be low or damaged. Make sure to check this issue by using one IA key, then the other.
NOTE: The ignition must be OFF to carry out the RFA module self-test. The ignition must be ON to carry out the network test for the RFA module.
-------------------------------------------------
R1 CHECK FOR COMMUNICATION WITH THE PCM AND RFA MODULE
- Connect the scan tool.
- Ignition ON.
- Carry out the network test using the scan tool.
- Does the scan tool establish communication with the PCM and the RFA module?
Yes
GO to R2.
No
REFER to Information Bus to diagnose the module that is not communicating with the scan tool.
-------------------------------------------------
R2 CHECK FOR RFA MODULE DTCs
- Retrieve the RFA module continuous and on-demand DTCs.
- Are any RFA module DTCs present?
Yes
REFER to DTC Charts. Anti-Theft - Intelligent Access (IA)
No
The no-start condition is not PATS-related. REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information to diagnose the cause of the no-start condition.
