Normal Operation

During each vehicle start sequence, when the start/stop button is pressed, the Remote Function Actuator (RFA) module requests all 3 passive start antennas to send out a low frequency query to determine if there are any Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Intelligent Access (IA) key(s) in the vehicle. If there are any IA key(s) in the vehicle (and the IA key battery is of sufficient capacity), it sends a high frequency signal to the Remote Functions Receiver (RFR) module. The RFR module sends the keycode it received from the IA key in a signal over hardwired circuits to the RFA module. The RFA module determines if the keycode is correct and if the keycode is correct, the RFA module sends an OK-to-start signal to the PCM over the High Speed Controller Area Network (HS-CAN).

If the RFR module does not get a response from the IA key, and the IA key is in the backup slot, the backup transceiver pulls the keycode from the IA key and sends it to the RFA module. If the RFA module determines the keycode is correct, the RFA module sends an OK-to-start signal to the PCM over the HS-CAN.

- DTC B10C7:13 (Interior Trunk Antenna: Circuit Open) - an on-demand DTC that sets when an open is detected on one of the circuits to the rear seat passive start antenna. The passive start antenna can also be opened internally. The specification for the passive start antennas is that they should be approximately 1-10 ohms across the 2 pins. If the resistance value is out of this range, the passive start antenna may not be of sufficient integrity to operate the system correctly.
- DTC B10C8:13 (Interior Centre Antenna: Circuit Open) - an on-demand DTC that sets when an open is detected on one of the circuits to the rear console passive start antenna. The passive start antenna can also be open internally. The specification for the passive start antennas is that they should be approximately 1-10 ohms across the 2 pins. If the resistance value is out of this range, the passive start antenna may not be of sufficient integrity to operate the system correctly.
- DTC B10C9:13 (Interior Front Antenna: Circuit Open) - an on-demand DTC that sets when an open is detected on one of the circuits to the front console passive start antenna. The passive start antenna can also be opened internally. The specification for the passive start antennas is that they should be approximately 1-10 ohms across the 2 pins. If the resistance value is out of this range, the passive start antenna may not be of sufficient integrity to operate the system correctly.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:

- Front console passive start antenna (interior front antenna)
- Rear console passive start antenna (interior center antenna)
- Rear seat passive start antenna (interior trunk antenna)
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- RFA module



PINPOINT TEST J: DTC B10C7:13, B10C8:13 OR B10C9:13

NOTE: The ignition must be OFF to carry out the RFA module self-test.

J1 INSPECT THE PASSIVE START ANTENNA FOR CORRECT INSTALLATION


- Ignition OFF.
- Verify the passive start antenna in question is correctly installed. Refer to Passive Start Antenna - Console, Front Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Passive Start Antenna - Console, Front,Passive Start Antenna - Console, Rear Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Passive Start Antenna - Console, Rear or Passive Start Antenna - Rear Seat Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Passive Start Antenna - Rear Seat.
- Clear the RFA DTCs.
- Retrieve the RFA DTCs.
- Is DTC B10C7:13, B10C8:13 or B10C9:13 retrieved?

Yes
GO to J2.

No
The system is OK. The DTC may have set due to an intermittent concern. TEST the system for normal operation.

J2 CHECK THE CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN


- Disconnect: RFA Module C2153a.
- Disconnect: Suspect Passive Start Antenna Connector.
- Measure the resistance between the RFA module C2153a, harness side and the suspect passive start antenna connector, harness side as follows:









- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to J3.

No
REPAIR the circuit in question. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test. TEST the system for normal operation.

J3 INSTALL A NEW PASSIVE START ANTENNA


- NOTE: Replacement of the passive start antenna does not require the IA keys to be programmed into the RFA module again.
- Install a new passive start antenna. Refer to Passive Start Antenna - Console, Front Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Passive Start Antenna - Console, Front, Passive Start Antenna - Console, Rear Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Passive Start Antenna - Console, Rear or Passive Start Antenna - Rear Seat Anti-Theft - Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) - Passive Start Antenna - Rear Seat.
- Clear the RFA module DTCs.
- Retrieve the RFA module DTCs.
- Is DTC B10C7:13, B10C8:13 or B10C9:13 retrieved?

Yes
GO to J4.

No
The system is OK. TEST the system for normal operation.

J4 CHECK FOR CORRECT RFA MODULE OPERATION


- Disconnect all the RFA module connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion
- damaged pins
- pushed-out pins
- Connect all the RFA module connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new RFA module. REFER to Body Control Systems. RESET the parameters in both the RFA module and the PCM. REFER to Passive Anti-Theft System (PATS) Parameter Reset - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA). PROGRAM the IA keys into the new RFA module. REFER to Key Programming Using Diagnostic Equipment - Intelligent Access (IA) With Intelligent Access (IA). TRANSFER the keyless entry keypad code into the new RFA module. REFER to Keyless Entry Keypad Code Programming in Doors, Hood and Trunk &/or Locks. CYCLE the ignition. REPEAT the self-test. Testing and Inspection

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. The concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
