Installation - Transaxle

Transaxle

1. NOTE: Wipe off excess grease. The splines should have a thin film of grease only. Excess grease can contaminate the clutch facing and affect clutch function.

Apply a very small amount of grease on the input shaft splines.

2. Secure the transaxle to the Transmission Jack with a safety strap. Raise and position the transaxle to the engine.

3. Install the clutch housing-to-oil pan bolt.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

4. Install the 2 oil pan-to-clutch housing bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

5. Install the 4 lower transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

6. Install the 2 transmission lower mount nuts and bolt to the transaxle. Do not tighten the fasteners at this time.

7. Position the clutch slave cylinder to the clutch release arm and install the bolts.
- Tighten to 20 Nm (177 lb-in).

8. Install the clutch tube hydraulic line bracket bolts.
- Tighten to 22 Nm (16 lb-ft).

9. Install the starter motor. For additional information, refer to Starting System.

10. NOTICE: Make sure to install the correct circlip for each application. Failure to use the correct diameter circlip may result in shaft removal concerns or shaft damage during operation.

Install a new LH halfshaft circlip and an intermediate shaft circlip.

11. Position the intermediate shaft in the transaxle and engage the intermediate shaft splines with the transaxle side gears. Make sure the circlip is locked in the gear.

12. Install the 2 intermediate shaft support bracket bolts.
- Tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-ft).

13. Align the splines on the RH halfshaft with the intermediate shaft and push the halfshaft in until the circlip locks the shafts together.
- After the RH halfshaft is installed in the intermediate shaft, pull the halfshaft inner end to make sure the circlip is locked.

14. Insert the RH halfshaft into the wheel hub.

15. Install the Differential Oil Seal Protector in the LH oil seal.

16. NOTICE: The sharp edges on the halfshaft splines can splice or puncture the oil seal. Use care when inserting the LH halfshaft into the transmission or damage to the oil seal may occur.

Push the LH halfshaft into the transmission until the circlip locks the halfshaft to the differential side gear.

17. Insert the LH halfshaft into the wheel hub.

18. Using the Halfshaft Installer, seat the LH and RH halfshafts into the wheel hubs.

19. NOTICE: Do not tighten the front wheel hub nut with the vehicle on the ground. The nut must be tightened to specification before the vehicle is lowered onto the wheels. Wheel bearing damage will occur if the wheel bearing is loaded with the weight of the vehicle applied.

NOTE: Apply the brake to keep the halfshaft from moving.

Install the front wheel hub nuts.

- Tighten to 255 Nm (185 lb-ft).

20. Stake the new nut in line with the keyway to a recommended minimum depth of 1 mm (0.039 in) below the keyway diameter to engage the locking feature.

21. Install the front subframe. For additional information, refer to Frame.

22. Install the roll restrictor bracket and roll restrictor.

1. Install the roll restrictor bracket and bolts.
- Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

2. Install the roll restrictor and the roll restrictor bracket through bolt.
- Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

3. Install the roll restrictor-to-subframe through bolt.
- Tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb-ft).

23. Connect the reverse lamp switch electrical connector.

24. Connect the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

25. NOTE: If one or both of the mount studs were removed or came out, do not reinstall the old stud(s). Install a new stud(s). Make sure they are properly seated in the case.

Tighten the transaxle rear support insulator nuts and bolt to specification.

- Tighten to 80 Nm (59 lb-ft).

26. Install the 3 upper transaxle-to-engine bolts.
- Tighten to 48 Nm (35 lb-ft).

27. Attach the wire harness to the transaxle.

28. Remove the Engine Support Bar.

29. Install the gearshift and shift cables onto the transaxle bracket and gearshift control assembly. Make sure the cables are engaged in the shift bracket and fully installed on the gearshift control assembly.

30. Install the battery tray and battery. For additional information, refer to Battery.

31. Install the Air Cleaner (ACL) assembly. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.

32. Install the splash shield and the 7 bolts.
- Tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in).

33. Check the vehicle for normal operation.
