Cylinder Head
Disassembly
1. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark plugs, damage may occur to the cylinder head or spark plug.
Remove the spark plugs.
2. NOTE: Keep the valves, valve springs, retainers and retainer keys in order so they can be installed in their original positions.
Using the Valve Spring Compressor, remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring and the retainer. Remove the valve.
- Repeat the procedure until all of the valves are removed.
3. Remove and discard the valve seals.
4. NOTE: Mark the position of the camshaft bearing caps so they can be installed in their original positions.
Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the camshaft bearing caps.
5. Remove the camshaft.
Assembly
1. NOTE: Lubricate all parts with clean engine oil prior to assembly.
Position the camshaft.
2. NOTE: The camshaft bearing caps must be installed in their original positions.
NOTE: After installing the bolts, check the camshaft for free rotation.
Install the camshaft bearing caps and the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in 2 stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 6 Nm (53 lb-in).
- Stage 2: Tighten to 16 Nm (142 lb-in).
3. NOTE: Valves must be installed in the positions from which they were removed.
Install the valve.
4. Using the Valve Stem Oil Seal Installer, install new valve stem seals.
5. NOTE: The valve springs, retainers and retainer keys must be installed in the positions from which they were removed.
Using the Valve Spring Compressor, install the valve spring, the retainer and the retainer keys.
6. NOTICE: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark plugs, damage may occur to the cylinder head or spark plug.
Install the spark plugs.
- Tighten to 17 Nm (150 lb-in).
