Removal and Installation
NOTE: New Teflon seals must be installed any time the lines are disconnected from the steering gear.
1. Turn the steering wheel 1/4 turn to the right and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
3. Loosen the 2 outer tie-rod end jam nuts.
^ To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
4. Remove and discard the 2 outer tie-rod end cotter pins and nuts.
^ To install, tighten to 55 Nm (41 ft. lbs.).
5. CAUTION: Do not damage the tie-rod end boot when installing the special tool.
Using the special tools, disconnect the outer tie-rod end.
6. NOTE: Note the number of times the tie-rod end turns for assembly reference.
Remove the tie-rod end.
7. Position the intermediate shaft boot aside.
8. Remove and discard the intermediate steering shaft pinch bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft coupling.
^ To install, tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
9. Remove and discard the 2 power steering gear-to-subframe mounting nuts.
^ To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).
10. Support the rear portion of the front subframe with jack stands.
11. Remove and discard the front subframe rear mounting bolts. Lower the rear of the front subframe approximately 102 mm (4 inches).
^ To install, tighten to 115 Nm (85 ft. lbs.).
12. Remove the power steering pressure line bracket bolt and detach the bracket from the steering gear.
^ To install, tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
13. Disconnect the power steering pressure and return line fittings from the steering gear. Discard the seals.
^ To install, tighten to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.).
14. Remove the steering gear out of the left fender well.
15. NOTE: To ease installation, center and then turn the steering gear input shaft 1/4 turn to the right. Guide the steering column intermediate shaft onto the steering gear as the subframe is raised into position.
To install, reverse the removal procedure.
^ Use new fasteners.
16. NOTE: Whenever a line fitting with Teflon (R) O-ring seal is disconnected, a new Teflon (R) O-ring seal must be installed.
Using the special tool, install new Teflon (R) O-ring seals on the power steering line fittings.
17. Fill and leak check the system.
18. Check and, if necessary adjust front toe.
