Disassembly

1. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark plugs, damage can occur to the cylinder head or spark plug.

Remove the spark plugs.

2. NOTE: Mark each hydraulic lash adjuster to make sure it is installed in its original position.

Remove the hydraulic lash adjusters.





3. NOTE: Keep the valves, valve springs, retainers and retainer keys in order so they can be installed in their original positions.

Using the special tool, remove the valve spring retainer keys, the valve spring and the retainer. Remove the valve.
- Repeat the procedure until all of the valves are removed.





4. Remove and discard the valve seals.

5. NOTE: Mark the position of the camshaft bearing caps so they can be installed in their original positions.

Remove the bolts in the sequence shown and remove the oil supply tube and the camshaft bearing caps.





6. Remove the camshaft.

Assembly

NOTE: Lubricate all parts with clean engine oil prior to assembly.

NOTE: Install the camshaft roller followers only after the cylinder head is installed in the vehicle and the timing procedure has been carried out.

1. Inspect the cylinder head.
2. Position the camshaft.

3. NOTE: The camshaft bearing caps must be installed in their original positions.

NOTE: After installing the bolts, check the camshaft for free rotation.

Position the camshaft bearing caps, the oil supply tube and the bolts. Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown in 2 stages.
- Stage 1: Tighten to 6 Nm (53 inch lbs.).
- Stage 2: Tighten to 16 Nm (12 ft. lbs.).





4. NOTE: Valves must be installed in the position from which they were removed.

Install the valve.
5. Using the special tool, install new valve stem seals.





6. NOTE: The valve springs, retainers and retainer keys must be installed in the position from which they were removed.

Using the special tool, install the valve spring, the retainer and the retainer keys.





7. NOTE: Install the hydraulic lash adjusters in the same positions from which they were removed.

Install the hydraulic lash adjusters.





8. CAUTION: Only use hand tools when removing or installing the spark plugs, damage can occur to the cylinder head or spark plug.

Install the spark plugs.
- Tighten to 17 Nm (13 ft. lbs.).
