Removal
1. Place the transaxle range selector lever in the PARK position.
2. Remove the battery tray.





3. Disconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the breather tubes.





4. Remove the engine air cleaner and intake tube.





5. Remove the air filter assembly.





6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.





7. Disconnect the electrical connector.





8. Remove the power steering line bracket.





9. Remove the electrical connector bracket.





10. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.





11. Install the engine lifting bracket on the RH (back) side of the engine.





12. Install the engine lifting bracket on the LH (front) side of the engine.





13. Remove the 6 upper bolts from the transaxle side pan.
14. Raise the vehicle.
15. Remove the LH wheel and tire.





16. Remove the 5 LH front inner fender splash shield retainers.
17. Remove the LH transaxle support and insulator.
18. It will be necessary to lower the left side of the subframe to remove the pan through the wheel well.





19. Install the special tools.





20. Remove the LH lower ball joint nut.





21. Using the special tools, disconnect the LH ball joint from the lower arm.

22. CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten the nut, or bearing and seal damage can result. Install nut using the hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.





Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the front stabilizer bar links.





23. Position the boot out of the way.





24. Remove the bolt and disconnect the intermediate shaft coupling. Discard the bolt.





25. Loosen the RH front engine mount nut.
26. Loosen the 2 subframe bolts on the RH side and remove the 2 subframe bolts on the LH side, using screw jacks support and lower the subframe to access the transmission pan.





27. Remove the 9 transaxle side pan bolts and remove the transaxle side pan and gasket.

28. CAUTION: Do not pull on the wires or the electrical connectors. Damage to the connectors will result.





Lift the locking tab and disconnect the electrical connectors.
29. Position the transaxle wiring harness aside.

30. CAUTION: Do not remove the 2 bolts that hold the pump assembly and main control valve body together as the pump assembly may fall from the main control valve body.

CAUTION: Only 4 of the 6 pump cover bolts need to be removed.





Remove the bolts.
31. Disconnect the manual linkage.





32. Remove the main pump assembly and the main control valve body by carefully sliding it off the pump shaft.

Installation





1. Install the pump assembly and main control valve body onto the pump shaft.
2. Rotate the pump assembly and main control valve body to connect the manual valve link with the manual valve.

3. CAUTION: Do not use the bolts to draw pump assembly and main control valve body onto the chain cover case. Component damage may occur.





Use the valve body guide pins to install the pump assembly and main control valve body. Install the bolt and tighten in sequence shown.
^ Tighten to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the transaxle wire harness retaining clip into the separator plate.





5. Connect the electrical connectors.

6. NOTE: The transaxle side cover gasket is reusable if not torn or ripped.





Remove the gasket. Clean and inspect the gasket, reinstall gasket onto the pan.





7. Loosely install the 15 transaxle side pan bolts.





8. Tighten the 4 transaxle side pan bolts.
^ Tighten to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).





9. Tighten the 11 transaxle side pan bolts.
^ Tighten to 29 Nm (21 ft. lbs.).
10. Install the LH transaxle support and insulator.

11. NOTE: It will be necessary to reinstall the left side of the subframe.

12. Using a screw jack, position the subframe and install the 2 bolts on the LH side and tighten all 4 bolts.
^ Tighten to 103 Nm (76 ft. lbs.).





13. Install the RH front engine mount nut.
^ Tighten to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).





14. Install the bolt and connect the intermediate shaft coupling.
^ Tighten to 47 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).





15. Position the boot back onto the intermediate shaft coupling.

16. CAUTION: Use extreme care not to damage boot seal. Do not use power tools to tighten the nut, or bearing and seal damage can result. Install nut using the hex hold feature to prevent the stud from rotating.





Connect the front stabilizer bar links. Install the 2 nuts.
^ Tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).





17. Install the LH lower ball joint nut.
^ Tighten to 80 Nm (59 ft. lbs.).





18. Install the LH front fender splash shield and the 5 retainers.
19. Install the LH wheel and tire.





20. Remove the LH engine lifting bracket.





21. Remove the RH engine lifting bracket.





22. Remove the special tools.





23. Reconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor connector.





24. Install the electrical connector bracket.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





25. Install the electrical connector bracket.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).





26. Reconnect the electrical connector.





27. Reconnect the electrical connectors.





28. Install the air filter assembly.





29. Install the engine air cleaner and tube.





30. Reconnect the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and the breather tubes.
31. Reinstall the battery tray.
32. Fill the transaxle assembly with 0.946 L (1 quart) of clean automatic transmission fluid.
33. Start the engine. Move the transaxle range selector lever through all positions. Check the fluid level.
