Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair

Differential Fluid Seals

Special Tool(s):








Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Remove both halfshafts.

4. NOTE: The differential seal is a 2-piece constructed seal.





Using the special tools, remove the left differential seal.





5. Using the special tools, remove the LH differential seal.
1 Rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the Front Cover Seal Remover.
3 Remove the metal protector from the LH differential seal and remove the protector from the tool.





6. Using the special tools, remove the rubber portion of the LH differential seal.
1 Install the special tool into the left differential seal and rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the Front Cover Seal Remover.
3 Remove the rubber portion of the seal.





7. Install the special tools into the RH differential seal.





8. Using the special tools, remove the RH differential seal metal protector.
1 Rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the Front Cover Seal Remover.
3 Remove the metal protector of the seal.





9. Using the special tools, remove the rubber portion of the seal.
1 Rotate the Front Cover Seal Remover.
2 Rotate the forcing screw while holding the Front Cover Seal Remover.
3 Remove the rubber portion of the seal.

Installation





1. Using the special tools, install the LH differential seal.





2. Using the special tools, install the RH seal.
3. Install the halfshafts into the vehicle.
4. Reconnect the battery ground cable.
