Exhaust Pipe: Service and Repair

Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
3. Remove the 2 engine roll restrictor bolts and the engine roll restrictor.
4. Remove the ground strap bolt, the ground strap, the nut and the heat shield.
5. Remove the splash shield and the air deflector.
6. Disconnect the 2 catalyst monitor sensor (CMS) electrical connectors.
7. Remove the engine mount nut.
8. Remove the transmission mount nut.
9. NOTE: Support the exhaust with mechanic's wire.
Remove the 2 nuts and separate the catalytic converter from the dual converter Y-pipe.
^ Discard the nuts and the gasket.
10. Remove the 2 nuts and separate the dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold.
^ Discard the nuts.
11. Remove and discard the dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold bolt.
12. Using the special tools, raise the front of the engine.
13. CAUTION: The sharp edges on the converter can cut the CV joint boot. Make sure to protect the halfshaft boot with a suitable covering before removing the converter assembly.
CAUTION: Use caution removing the catalytic converter. Make sure not to damage the manifold outlet flare, the converter inlet flare or the studs.
Remove the dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold bolt and the dual converter Y-pipe.
^ Discard the bolt and the gasket.
14. If installing a new dual converter Y-pipe, remove the 2 catalyst monitor sensors.
Installation
1. NOTE: Apply anti-seize lubricant to the catalyst monitor sensor threads before installation.
If installing a new dual converter Y-pipe, install the 2 catalyst monitor sensors.
^ Tighten to 46 Nm (34 ft. lbs.).
2. Position the dual converter Y-pipe and loosely start the nuts and the bolt.
3. Tighten the new dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold bolt.
^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
4. NOTE: To correctly seat the converter, alternately tighten the exhaust manifold-to-catalytic converter nuts to specification.
Tighten the 2 new dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
5. Lower the engine.
6. Tighten the new dual converter Y-pipe-to-exhaust manifold bolt.
^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
7. Position the heat shield into place. Install the ground strap, the ground strap bolt and heat shield nut.
^ Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
8. Install the engine mount nut.
^ Tighten to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
9. Install the transmission mount nut.
^ Tighten to 90 Nm (66 ft. lbs.).
10. NOTE: Clean the mating surfaces of the catalytic converter and the dual converter Y-pipe.
NOTE: To correctly seat the converters, alternately tighten the catalytic converter-to-dual converter Y-pipe nuts to specification.
Connect the catalytic converter to the dual converter Y-pipe and install the nuts.
^ Tighten to 40 Nm (30 ft. lbs.).
11. Connect the CMS electrical connectors.
12. Install the splash shield and the air deflector and tighten the screws.
13. Install the engine roll restrictor and the bolts.
^ Tighten to 48 Nm (35 ft. lbs.).
14. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Battery.
