Removal

Engine

Special Tool(s):





Removal
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Maintenance/Service and Repair.
2. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.
3. Park the windshield wiper arms in the highest position on the windshield.
4. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Battery.
5. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. For additional information, refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
6. Drain the engine cooling system. For additional information, refer to Cooling System.
7. Remove the RH and LH halfshafts.
8. Remove the air cleaner outlet pipe. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.





9. Remove the 3 retaining clips (2 shown) and the RH cowl panel grille.





10. Remove the clip on the RH cowl extension panel.





11. Remove the 3 screws (2 shown) and the RH cowl extension panel.





12. Remove the 3 nuts and position the steering column input shaft coupling boot aside.





13. Remove the pinch bolt and slide the coupling off the steering gear input shaft.





14. Remove the 2 retainers and the accelerator control splash shield.





15. Disconnect the accelerator cable, speed control actuator cable and the throttle return spring from the throttle body.





16. Remove the 2 bolts and position the accelerator cable bracket aside.





17. Disconnect the vacuum hose and the evaporative emissions (EVAP) return tube.





18. Remove the nut and disconnect the manual control lever cable.





19. Disconnect the manual control lever cable from the bracket and position aside.





20. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the 42-pin and transmission range (TR) sensor electrical connectors.





21. Disconnect the upper radiator hose and the heater hose.





22. Disconnect the power steering return hose.





23. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors and position the wire harness aside.
24. Disconnect the A/C suction tube from the accumulator drier. For additional information, refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
25. Disconnect the fuel tube spring lock coupling. For additional information, refer to Fuel Delivery and Air Induction.





26. Disconnect the degas bottle hose.





27. Remove the 2 bolts and the engine roll restrictor.





28. Disconnect the heater hose.





29. Remove the bolt and disconnect the ground wire terminals.





30. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector.





31. Remove the bolt and the ground wire terminal.





32. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector.





33. NOTE: Support the exhaust with mechanic's wire.

Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the catalytic converter from the dual converter Y-pipe.





34. Remove the 2 nuts and the muffler pipe clamp.
^ Separate and remove the catalytic converter from the muffler pipe.





35. Remove the nut and disconnect the A/C discharge tube.





36. Remove the 4 bolts and the radiator support bracket.





37. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the radiator and degas bottle supply hose.





38. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler hose.





39. If equipped, disconnect the wire harness electrical connector.





40. Disconnect the auxiliary oil cooler assembly.
^ Disconnect the transmission oil cooler hose, if equipped.
^ Disconnect the power steering return hose.





41. Remove the oil pan drain plug and drain the engine oil.
^ To install, tighten to 13 Nm (10 ft. lbs.).





42. Remove the starter motor electrical connector cover.





43. Remove the 2 nuts and disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.





44. Remove the 2 bolts and the starter motor.





45. Remove the bolt and the engine inspection cover.





46. Remove the 4 torque converter nuts.





47. Remove the nuts and disconnect the LH and RH stabilizer links from the stabilizer bar.





48. Remove the cotter pins, nuts and separate the LH and RH tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles.





49. Position the special tool.





50. Remove the 4 front subframe-to-body bolts.





51. Using the special tool, lower the powertrain and subframe assembly out of the vehicle.





52. Remove the nut and detach the power steering pressure (PSP) tube bracket.





53. Remove the nut and detach the PSP tube bracket.





54. Disconnect the PSP tube from the power steering pump.





55. Disconnect the spark plug wires.





56. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.





57. Remove the 3 bolts and the ignition coil.





58. Disconnect the output shaft speed (OSS) sensor electrical connector and position the wire harness aside.





59. Disconnect the turbine shaft speed (TSS) sensor electrical connector.





60. Disconnect the transaxle harness electrical connector and position the wire harness aside.





61. Remove the 2 nuts and the heat shield.





62. Install the special tool to the LH side of the engine.





63. Install the special tool to the RH side of the engine.





64. Using the special tools, support the engine.





65. Remove the 2 RH engine support insulator bracket-to-transmission bolts.





66. Remove the LH engine support insulator-to-subframe nut.





67. Remove the heat shield nut.





68. Remove the RH engine support insulator through bolt.





69. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.





70. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.





71. Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and the dual converter Y-pipe.





72. Disconnect the lower radiator hose from the coolant pump.





73. Remove the 5 transmission-to-engine bolts and 1 stud bolt.





74. Separate the engine from the transmission.
