Removal

CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.

1. Remove the upper intake manifold.
2. Lift the degas bottle hose off the valve cover studs and position the hose aside.
3. Lift the fuel charging wiring harness off the valve cover studs and position the wiring harness aside.
4. Detach the spark plug wire retainers from the valve cover stud bolts and position the wires aside.
5. Disconnect the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve electrical connector.

6. NOTE: To prevent stretching the valve cover gasket, loosen silicone gasket and sealant from the cylinder head by sliding a flat knife between the valve cover gasket and cylinder head.

Remove the 5 bolts, 3 stud bolts and the RH valve cover.
7. Remove the valve cover gasket, if necessary.

Installation

1. NOTE: Do not clean the valve cover gasket with solvent. Damage to the valve cover gasket may occur.

Using metal surface cleaner, clean the cylinder head mating surfaces.

2. NOTE: If the RH valve cover is not secured within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned with metal surface cleaner. Allow to dry until there is no sign of wetness or 4 minutes, whichever is longer. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.

Apply a bead of silicone gasket and sealant in 2 places where the cylinder head and intake manifold meet.
3. Install the valve cover gasket, if removed.
4. Install the RH valve cover, 5 bolts and 3 stud bolts.
^ Tighten to 12 Nm (9 ft. lbs.).
5. Connect the PCV valve electrical connector.
6. Attach the spark plug wire retainers to the valve cover stud bolts.
7. Attach the fuel charging wiring harness to the valve cover studs.
8. Attach the degas bottle hose to the valve cover studs.
9. Install the upper intake manifold.
