Removal
CAUTION: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
1. Remove the lower intake manifold.
2. Remove the RH exhaust manifold.
3. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.
4. Remove the bolt and detach the ground wires.
5. Loosen the bolt and disconnect the powertrain control module (PCM) electrical connector.
6. Disconnect the evaporative emissions (EVAP) canister purge valve electrical connector.
7. Disconnect the 3 RH spark plug wires and position the wires aside.
8. Detach the engine wiring harness retainer from the RH cylinder head.
9. Remove the catalytic converter heat shield-to-RH cylinder head bolt.
^ Position the ground wire aside.
10. CAUTION: The cylinder head must be cool before removing it from the engine. Cylinder head warpage can result if a warm or hot cylinder head is removed.
CAUTION: Place clean shop towels over exposed engine cavities. Carefully remove the towels so foreign material is not dropped into the engine.
CAUTION: The cylinder head bolts must be discarded and new bolts must be installed. They are tighten-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
Remove the 8 cylinder head bolts and the RH cylinder head.
^ Discard the bolts.
^ Remove and discard the cylinder head gasket.
11. CAUTION: Do not use metal scrapers, wire brushes, power abrasive discs or other abrasive means to clean the sealing surfaces. These tools cause scratches and gouges that make leak paths. Use a plastic scraping tool to remove all traces of the head gasket.
CAUTION: Observe all warnings or cautions and follow all application directions contained on the packaging of the silicone gasket remover and the metal surface prep.
NOTE: If there is no residual gasket material present, metal surface prep can be used to clean and prepare the surfaces.
Clean the cylinder head-to-cylinder block mating surfaces of both the cylinder head and the cylinder block.
1. Remove any large deposits of silicone or gasket material with a plastic scraper.
2. Apply silicone gasket remover, following package directions and allow to set for several minutes.
3. Remove the silicone gasket remover with a plastic scraper. A second application of silicone gasket remover may be required if residual traces of silicone or gasket material remain.
4. Apply metal surface prep, following package directions, to remove any remaining traces of oil or coolant and to prepare the surfaces to bond with the new gasket. Do not attempt to make the metal shiny. Some staining of the metal surfaces is normal.
12. NOTE: Make sure all cylinder head surfaces are clear of any gasket material, RTV, oil and coolant. The cylinder head surface must be clean and dry before running a flatness check.
NOTE: Use a straightedge that is calibrated by the manufacturer to be flat within 0.005 mm (0.0002 inch) per running foot length. For example, if the straightedge is 61-cm (24-inch) long, the machined edge must be flat within 0.010 mm (0.0004 inch) from end to end.
Support the cylinder heads on a bench with the head gasket side up. Inspect all areas of the deck face with a straightedge, paying particular attention to the oil pressure feed area. The cylinder heads must not have depressions deeper than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch) across a 38.1-mm (1.5-inch) square area, or scratches longer than 0.0254 mm (0.001 inch).
Installation
1. NOTE: The V notch in the cylinder head gasket faces the front of the engine.
Position a new cylinder head gasket.
2. Position the cylinder head.
3. NOTE: New cylinder head bolts must be installed. They are torque-to-yield designed and cannot be reused.
Install the 8 bolts and tighten the in 5 stages in the sequence shown.
^ Stage 1: Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 2: Loosen the bolts one full turn.
^ Stage 3: Tighten to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).
^ Stage 4: Rotate each bolt 90 degrees.
^ Stage 5: Rotate each bolt an additional 90 degrees.
4. Position the ground wire and install the catalytic converter heat shield-to-RH cylinder head bolt.
^ Tighten to 20 Nm (15 ft. lbs.).
5. Attach the wiring harness retainer to the RH cylinder head.
6. Connect the EGR tube to the RH exhaust manifold.
^ Tighten to 50 Nm (37 ft. lbs.).
7. Reposition and connect the 3 spark plug wires.
8. Connect the EVAP canister purge valve electrical connector.
9. Connect the PCM electrical connector.
^ Tighten to 4 Nm (35 inch lbs.).
10. Position the ground wires and install the bolt.
^ Tighten to 10 Nm (89 inch lbs.).
11. Connect the CKP electrical connector.
12. Install the RH exhaust manifold.
13. Install the lower intake manifold.
