Removal and Installation
CAUTION: Electronic modules are sensitive to static electrical charges. If exposed to these charges, damage may result.
1. Depower the supplemental restraint system (SRS).
2. If equipped with a floor console transmission range selector lever, remove the selector lever.
3. Remove the 2 front door scuff plates.
4. NOTE: When installing the A-pillar trim panels, be sure the alignment tabs are positioned correctly.
Remove the 2 A-pillar trim panels.
5. NOTE: Lift upwards on the rear edge of the defroster grille then slide rearward to remove.
Remove the instrument panel defroster grille.
- If equipped, disconnect the sunload sensor electrical connector.
6. Remove the 3 instrument panel cowl top bolts.
- To install, tighten to 8 Nm (71 lb-in)
7. Remove the parking brake release handle retainer clip.
8. Release the parking brake cable from the parking brake actuator and remove the parking brake release handle.
9. Remove the 2 bolts and instrument panel lower steering column cover.
- To install, tighten to 9 Nm (80 lb-in)
10. Loosen the 2 bolts and disconnect the 2 bulkhead electrical connectors.
- To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in)
11. Loosen the bulkhead connector bolt and disconnect the smart junction box (SJB).
- To install, tighten to 5 Nm (44 lb-in)
12. Disconnect the electrical connector from the bottom of the SJB.
13. CAUTION: Do not allow the steering column to rotate while the steering column shaft is disconnected or damage to the clockspring can result. If there is evidence that the steering column shaft has rotated, the clockspring must be removed and recentered.
Secure the steering wheel, remove the steering column pinch bolt and separate the intermediate shaft from the steering column.
- To install, tighten to 35 Nm (26 lb-ft).
14. If equipped with a steering column selector lever, disconnect the transmission shift cable from the steering column shift tube lever and disconnect the cable from the steering column bracket.
15. Remove the 2 pin-type retainers and the passenger side instrument panel insulator.
16. For vehicles equipped with electronic air temperature control (EATC), disconnect the air tube, vacuum connector, main climate control and blower motor speed control electrical connectors.
17. For vehicles without EATC, disconnect the vacuum connector, blower motor, blend door and thermal resistor electrical connectors.
18. Remove the 2 instrument panel side finish panels.
19. Remove the 4 instrument panel cowl side bolts.
- To install, tighten to 40 Nm (30 lb-in).
20. NOTE: This step requires an assistant.
Remove the instrument panel.
21. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
