Power Steering Line/Hose: Service and Repair
Power Steering Pump to Steering Gear Pressure lineMaterial:
Removal
CAUTION: When repairing the power steering system, care should be taken to prevent the entry of contaminants or premature failure of the power steering components can result.
All vehicles
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist.
4.0L engine
2. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and remove the accessory drive belt from the power steering pump pulley.
3. Remove the 3 pump pulley bolts and the power steering pump pulley.
4.6L engine
4. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
All vehicles
5. Remove the pressure line bracket nut.
6. Disconnect the pressure line fitting nut.
^ Discard the Teflon (R) seal.
7. Remove the 2 pressure line bracket-to-crossmember bolts.
8. Remove the bolt, rotate the clamp plate and remove the power steering pressure line.
^ Discard the O-ring seal.
Installation
All vehicles
1. Using the special tool, install a new Teflon (R) seal on the power steering pressure line fitting.
2. Install a new O-ring seal on the power steering pressure line and position the line on the steering gear.
3. Rotate the power steering line clamp plate and install the bolt.
^ Tighten to 23 Nm (17 ft. lbs.).
4. Install the 2 pressure line bracket-to-crossmember bolts.
^ Tighten to 9 Nm (80 inch lbs.).
5. Connect the pressure line fitting to the power steering pump.
^ Tighten to 65 Nm (48 ft. lbs.).
4.0L engine
6. Install the power steering pump pulley and the 3 pump pulley bolts.
^ Tighten to 25 Nm (18 ft. lbs.).
7. Rotate the tensioner counterclockwise and install the accessory drive belt to the power steering pump pulley.
4.6L engine
8. Install the pressure line bracket nut.
^ Tighten to 7 Nm (62 inch lbs.).
9. Install the power steering pump pulley.
All vehicles
10. Fill the power steering system.
