Flushing

Always flush the power rack and pinion steering gear when replacing the power steering pump due to fluid contamination.
1. Remove the power steering pump and power steering pump pulley and repair the power steering pump.
2. Install the power steering pump pulley on the repair power steering pump. Install the power steering pump. Flush the power steering pressure hose before installing. Connect only the power steering pressure hose.
3. Place the power steering return hose from the power rack and pinion steering gear in a container and plug the power steering reservoir pump hose.
4. Fill the power steering oil reservoir with Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford MERCON specification.
5. Disable ignition by removing the ignition coil fuse in the fuse junction panel fuse number 10 and raise the front wheels off the ground.
6. While adding approximately 1.9 liters (0.5 gallon) of Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford MERCON specification, turn the ignition switch to the START position and crank the engine with the starter motor while turning the steering wheel from left to right.

CAUTION: Do not crank engine for more than 30 seconds at a time, damage to the starter could result.

7. When all the fluid has been added, turn ignition switch to the OFF position and install number 10 fuse in the fuse junction panel.
8. Remove the plug from the power steering reservoir pump hose and connect the power steering reservoir pump hose to the power steering oil reservoir.
9. Check the Motorcraft MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent meeting Ford MERCON specification level. Add fluid if necessary. Do not overfill the reservoir.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock without hitting the stops to expel any trapped air.

NOTE: Front wheels must be off the floor during lock-to-lock rotation of steering wheel.
