Wheel Stud / Lug Nut: Description and Operation

DESCRIPTION

The vehicle uses metric (M-12) lug nuts. Replacement lug nuts must be of the same type and thread size. All metric (M-12) lug nuts are identified by the word METRIC stamped on the top surface of the lug nut.

NOTE: Aluminum wheels must use special "bulge" type metric (M-12) lug nuts with enlarged chamfers or distortion of the aluminum wheel hub bolt nut seat will result. Steel wheels must use this same "bulge" type metric nut to ensure proper retention of wheel cover locking pedestals.

ANTI-THEFT
^ Optional chrome-plated wheels on vehicles are equipped with anti-theft lug nuts (one per wheel) that are installed during vehicle pre-delivery.
^ The key is attached to the wheel lug nut wrench, stowed with the spare tire.
^ To allow vehicle service in the event the key has been misplaced, a Rotunda Master Service Tool Set 164-R3104 or equivalent is available at most Ford and Lincoln/Mercury dealer service departments. The lock manufacturer can be contacted at 1-800-669-8788 if a master key set is not available.
^ The key has a circular keyway that is matched to the female slot in the anti-theft lug nut. When locking wheels are reinstalled, torque to 115-142 Nm (85-104 ft. lbs.). DO NOT use a power impact wrench on the lug nut key.
