Camshaft Bearing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL
1. Remove engine and place on work stand. Remove camshaft, crankshaft and camshaft rear bearing cover.
2. Remove camshaft bearing with Camshaft Bearing Set T65L-6250-A.
3. Select proper size expanding collet and backup nut and assemble on the expanding mandrel. With the expanding collet collapsed, install collet assembly in the camshaft bearing and tighten backup nut on the expanding mandrel until the collet fits the camshaft bearing.
4. Assemble puller screw and extension if necessary and install on the expanding mandrel. Wrap a cloth around the threads of the puller screw to protect the camshaft bearing or journal. Tighten the puller nut against the thrust bearing and pulling plate to remove camshaft bearing. Hold the end of the puller screw to prevent it from turning.

NOTE: To remove the front camshaft bearing, install the puller from the rear of the cylinder block.

5. Repeat Step 4 for each camshaft bearing.

INSTALLATION

CAUTION: Failure to use the correct expanding collet can cause severe camshaft bearing damage.

1. The camshaft bearings are available prefinished to size and require no reaming for standard and 0.38 mm (0.015 inch) undersize journal diameters.

CAUTION: Align the oil holes in the camshaft bearings with the oil holes in the cylinder block before pressing camshaft bearings into place.

2. Position new camshaft bearings at the bearing bores and press them in place with Camshaft Bearing Set T65L-6250-A. Center the pulling plate and puller screw to avoid damage to the camshaft bearing.
3. Make sure the front camshaft bearing is installed 0.51-0.89 mm (0.020-0.035 inch) below the front face of the cylinder block.
4. Install camshaft rear bearing cover.
5. Install camshaft, crankshaft, push rod and related components. Do not check connecting rod and main bearing clearances as part of camshaft bearing replacement.
6. Install engine in vehicle.
