Valve Clearance: Adjustments
INSPECTION1. Camshaft lobes must be directed 90° or more away from valve lifters.
2. Insert feeler gauge at 90° angle to camshaft.
3. Ensure intake valve clearance at room temperature is 0.006 - 0.010 inch.
4. Ensure exhaust valve clearance at room temperature is 0.010 - 0.014 inch.
ADJUSTMENT
Because hydraulic valve lifters are used in this engine, no periodic valve adjustment is required. However, should any valve train components be replaced or intermixed, clearances on those valves must be inspected and corrected. To adjust valve clearances, proceed as follows:

1. Insert lifter compressor T89P-6500-A, or equivalent, under camshaft next to lobe and rotate down to depress bucket valve lifter.

2. Insert lifter holder T96P-6500-AH, or equivalent, and remove compressor tool.
3. Direct a jet of compressed air toward hole in face of valve adjusting spacer to lift spacer off lifter. Wear eye protection during this procedure.
4. Determine size of adjusting spacer by numbers on bottom face of spacer or by measuring with micrometer. Install spacer that will provide needed clearance.
5. Install new spacer with numbers facing down.
6. Repeat procedure for each valve by rotating crankshaft as needed.
7. After all valves have been inspected, ensure spacers are fully seated in their lifters.
