1993 TAURUS
This TSB is being republished in its entirety to revise the model years affected. The TSB should be for 1993 vehicles only.
ISSUE:
Some vehicles may not indicate fuel level properly and/or display "CO" on instrument cluster. This may be caused by the fuel pump/sending unit degrading within the methanol fuel. This degradation could lead to an open circuit in the fuel indication system.
ACTION:
Install Fuel Pump/Sender Assembly, Indication Module, and Jumper Harness. The last two (2) items will reverse polarity on the sender at a given frequency (simulated AC signal) and send a related signal level to the instrument cluster. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
Confirm that the vehicle has not had this repair performed. If the vehicle has had this repair performed. refer to Section 13-01A of the 1993 Taurus/Sable Service Manual for diagnosis of the fuel indication system. If diagnostics lead to replacement of the sender, perform the following repair:
NOTE:
REFER TO SECTION 10-01 OF THE TAURUS/SABLE SERVICE MANUAL FOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION PROCEDURES OF TANK AND FUEL PUMP/SENDER ASSEMBLY.
1. Drain and remove the fuel tank.
2. Remove the fuel pump/sender assembly.
3. Install a new fuel pump/sender assembly (F4DZ-9350-AFFV).
NOTE:
DO NOT USE PREVIOUS LEVEL PUMP/SENDER (F3DU-9H307-EA) WHEN PERFORMING THIS REPAIR.
4. Reinstall fuel tank and all connections.
5. Access connector # C301 (Figure 1, black 14-pin), located at the front of the LH front door sill.
a. Remove the front two (2) door jam moulding screws and the one (1) holding the kick panel.
b. Pull up slightly on the door jam moulding, remove the kick panel and pull carpeting away.
c. Remove wire shield to access connector # C3O1 (Figure 1).
d. Open connector # C301 and install Jumper Harness, F3DZ-14406-A (Figure 3).
e. Connect Indication Module, F4DZ-14A069-A (Figure 4) to the 8-pin connector on the Jumper Harness.
f. Tape against the main harness (Figure 2).
g. Install wire shield and reposition carpeting.
h. Reinstall kick panel and door jam moulding.
