Cylinder Identification Sensor: Service and Repair

Camshaft Position Sensor:

NOTE: Special service tool required, synchro positioner tool T93P-12200-A

CAUTION: Prior to removal of the camshaft position sensor, set cylinder number 1 to 0 degrees top dead center (TDC) of compression stroke. Then note the position of the camshaft position sensor electrical connector. The installation procedure requires that the connector be located in the same position.

REMOVAL
1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Disconnect fuel charging wiring connector from Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor.
3. Remove CMP retaining screws and remove sensor from CMP housing.
4. If CMP sensor housing is to be removed from the cylinder block, proceed with removal step 5. If CMP sensor housing is not being removed proceed to installation step 6.
5. Remove hold-down clamp (bolt and washer assembly).
NOTE: The oil pump intermediate shaft (6A618) should be remove with the CMP sensor housing.
6. Remove CMP sensor housing from cylinder block.

Sensor Location and Alignment:

INSTALLATION

NOTE: If the CMP sensor housing was not removed then proceed to installation step 6.

CAUTION: If the replacement CMP sensor housing does not contain a plastic locator cover tool, a special service tool such as Syncro Positioner Tool T93P-12200-A, must be obtained prior to installation of the replacement CMP sensor housing. Failure to follow this procedure will result in improper CMP sensor housing alignment. This will result in the ignition system and fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage.

1. If the plastic locator cover tool is not attached to the replacement CMP sensor housing, attach Synchro Positioner Tool T93P-12200-A as follows:
a. Engage CMP sensor housing vane into the radial slot of the tool.
b. Rotate tool on CMP sensor housing until tool boss engages notch in CMP sensor housing.
2. Transfer oil pump intermediate shaft from old CMP sensor housing to replacement CMP sensor housing.
3. Install CMP sensor housing so that drive gear engagement occurs when arrow on locator tool is pointed approximately 30 degrees counterclockwise from the rear face of the cylinder block. This step will locate CMP sensor electrical connector in the pre-removal position.

CAUTION: If CMP sensor electrical connector is not positioned properly, DO NOT reposition the connector by rotating the CMP sensor housing. This will result in the ignition system and fuel system being out of time with the engine, possibly causing engine damage. Remove the CMP sensor housing and repeat installation procedure, beginning with Step 1.

4. Install hold-down clamp (washer and bolt) and tighten bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft lb).
5. Remove Syncro Positioner Tool T93P-12200-A.
6. Install CMP sensor and retaining screws. Tighten screws to 2.5-3.5 Nm (22-31 in lb).
7. Connect fuel charging wiring connector to CMP sensor.
8. Connect negative battery cable.

NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the powertrain control module relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 10 miles or more to relearn the adaptive strategy.
