FORD: 1989-91 PROBE

This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to include the 1991 model year and expand adjustment procedures.

ISSUE: Interior window fogging or moisture condensation may be caused by the operator positioning the control lever in the recirculate position without depressing the A/C button or by the recirculation/fresh control door "moving" from the "fresh" to the "recirculate" position. This condition is caused by incorrect cable adjustment.

ACTION: Inspect and, if necessary, adjust the recirculation/fresh control cable. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.

NOTE: THE FOLLOWING DESCRIPTION WILL ENSURE PROPER OPERATION OF THE FRESH AIR CLIMATE CONTROL SYSTEM BEFORE REPAIRS ARE MADE.

^ The "fresh" air lever position should be used for most climate control operation/conditions, such as heating and defrosting. Defrosting in high humidity conditions requires A/C compressor engagement (A/C button depressed).

^ The "recirculate" air lever position should be used for maximum air conditioning (A/C button depressed) when temperature/humidity is very high. This position will recirculate drier interior air, reduce the amount of water condensation the evaporator generates and reduce water condensation leakage from the A/C and blower motor housing.

^ A yellow caution label on the face of the climate control panel advises the owner of the correct lever positions and use of the A/C for defrosting. This label should only be removed by the vehicle owner.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Inspect the carpet for an indication of moisture from water leaks. Moisture from wet carpet could contribute to window fogging. Dry the carpet as needed.

NOTE: REFER TO TSB 91-8-6 FOR COWL WATER LEAK REPAIRS.

2. Clean all interior glass with Ford glass cleaner or equivalent.

3. Check the adjustment of the recirculation/fresh control cable as follows:

a. Start the engine and position the control lever in the "fresh" position, (lever to the far right).

b. Close all doors and windows and turn the blower motor to "high".

c. Watch the recirculation lever for movement. If the lever does not move in 1-2 minutes, open and close the vehicle doors and /or sun roof (if so equipped). Again, observe for control lever movement. If no movement is observed, return the vehicle to the owner advising proper usage of the recirculation lever. If movement was observed, proceed to step 4.

4. Refer to the 1991 Probe Shop Manual, section 12-03B page 30 for illustration and location of the control cable attachment to the air door. Refer to Figure 1.

5. Remove the cable from the air door lever (on the blower motor housing).

6. Pull the lever on the door until it is firmly closed ("fresh" position).

7. Move the control panel lever to the "fresh" position, this will retract the cable end into the cable housing.

8. With the recirculation door fully closed and the control lever in the "fresh" position, reattach the cable end to the lever door pin and secure the cable housing to the housing brace retainer clip.

9. Move the control panel lever left and right several times to make sure the cable does not bind and the recirculation door fully closes. When the door is fully closed, ("fresh" position) you will hear a dull "thud" sound indicating the door is closed.

10. Re-assemble the glove compartment panel and lower trim panel.
