^ TRANSAXLE - 4EAT - SLIPPING 2-3 UPSHIFT - DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE
FORD:
1989-90 PROBE
ISSUE:
The inspection information in TSB 90-10-10 did not include a detailed oil pump pressure testing procedure to assist in diagnosing and identifying the slip condition.
ACTION:
If service is required, use the following procedure to diagnose and identify the cause of the slip condition.
1. Check the oil pump pressure.
2. Inspect the transmission fluid for contamination and burnt odor or color.
^ If the fluid is burned, change the fluid.
^ If abnormal amounts of metal or clutch material are found in the oil pan, remove the transmission, inspect all internal components and replace the parts as needed.
3. If the transmission fluid is OK, attach an oil pressure gauge as shown in TSB 89-7-8.
4. At normal operating temperature and the engine at idle, put the transmission in PARK and observe the oil pressure gauge. The pressure should be 63-66 psi.
5. If the oil pressure is out of range, adjust the kickdown cable. Refer to TSB 89-7-8 for the service procedure.
6. Increase the engine RPM to 2000 and perform the following tests.
^ Pull the kickdown cable to the end of its travel. You should see at least 115 psi. Release the cable.
^ Quickly and smoothly pull the cable out 1/2 way and hold. A good oil pump should indicate a smooth pressure increase and level off at a stabilized pressure.
NOTE:
A STICKING OIL PUMP SPOOL VALVE WILL INDICATE A PRESSURE SPIKE AND VARIATION IN PRESSURE BEFORE LEVELING OUT OR IT MAY SHOW LITTLE OR NO INCREASE IN PRESSURE. IF THE PRESSURE DOES NOT RESPOND TO THE TESTS IN STEP # 6, REPLACE THE OIL PUMP SPOOL VALVE ASSEMBLY. REFER TO TSB 90-10-10 FOR SERVICE DETAILS. Refer to Figure 1.
7. If the 2-3 slip continues after the spool valve is replaced, then...
^ Replace the oil pump assembly. Refer to the 1989/90 Probe Shop Manual, Section 17-01 for service details.
^ Inspect the internal transmission components for wear according to TSB 89-6-12.
