^ TRANSMISSION - 4EAT - DELAYED 2-3 UPSHIFT - OIL PUMP SPOOL VALVE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

^ TRANSMISSION - 4EAT - SLIPPING 2-3 UPSHIFT - OIL PUMP SPOOL VALVE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

Article No. 90-10-10

FORD: 1989-90 PROBE

ISSUE: A delayed or slipping 2-3 upshift may be caused by the transaxle oil pump. The internal pressure regulator may stick inside the bore of the oil pump.

ACTION: Inspect the transmission and, if necessary, first install a new oil pump spool valve instead of replacing the oil pump assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

Inspection Procedure

1. Check the oil pump pressure.

2. Check the transmission fluid for contamination and burnt odor or color.

^ If the fluid is burned, change the fluid.
^ If abnormal amounts of metal or clutch material are seen in the oil pad, remove the transmission, inspect all internal components and replace the parts as needed.

3. If the vehicle fails the oil pump pressure test or the transmission fluid is contaminated, replace the oil pump spool valve by using the appropriate service procedure outlined below.

4. If the vehicle passes the oil pump pressure test, refer to the 1990 Probe Shop Manual, Section 17-01 for diagnosis and testing procedures.

Figure 1:

2.2L ENGINE - SPOOL VALVE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

2. Use a 19 mm swivel socket and a six inch extension to remove the spool valve plug as shown in Figure 1.

3. Remove the spring and spool valve with a small pencil magnet.

4. Insert the new spool valve into the oil pump with the partially closed end of the valve pointing outward.

5. Insert the spring until it is flush with the oil pump housing.

6. Replace the copper washer on the spool valve plug.

7. Reinstall the plug onto the oil pump housing. Tighten the plug to 17-26 lb.ft. (23-35 N-m).

8. Check the ATF fluid level and add fluid if necessary.

9. Recheck the line pressure.

a. The pressure should be 63-66 psi.

b. Adjust the kickdown cable if the pressure is out of range. Refer to TSB 89-7-8 for service procedure.

10. Check to see if 2-3 slip was corrected.

3.0L ENGINE - SPOOL VALVE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE

1. Remove the air cleaner assembly.

2. Mount an engine support bar (D87-6000-A) or equivalent and attach it to the engine.

3. Remove the three (3) retaining nuts on the center transaxle mount.

4. Remove the nut and bolt which retain the left transaxle mount to the body.

5. Lower the transaxle with the support bar until the retaining bolt for the spool valve can be removed.

6. Use a 19 mm swivel socket and a six inch extension to remove the spool valve plug as shown in Figure 1.

7. Remove the spring and spool valve with a small pencil magnet.

8. Insert the new spool valve into the oil pump with the partially closed end of the valve pointing outward.

9. Insert the spring until it is flush with the oil pump housing.

10. Replace the copper washer on the spool valve plug.

11. Reinstall the plug onto the oil pump housing. Tighten the plug to 17-26 lb.ft. (23-35 N-m).

12. Check the ATF fluid level and add fluid if necessary.

13. Recheck the line pressure.

a. The pressure should be 63-66 psi.

b. Adjust the kickdown cable if the pressure is out of range. Refer to TSB 89-7-8 for service procedure.

14. Reposition the transaxle assembly.

15. Re-install the nut and bolt which retain the left transaxle mount to the body.

16. Re-install the three (3) retaining nuts on the center transaxle mount.

17. Remove the engine support bar (D87-6000-A).

18. Re-install air cleaner assembly.

19. Check to see if 2-3 slip was corrected.

If the 2-3 slip continues after spool valve replacement, then ...

^ Replace the oil pump assembly. Refer to the 1989/90 Probe Shop Manual, Section 21-05 for service details.

^ Inspect the internal transmission components according to TSB 89-6-12.
