^ NOISE - "GURGLING" SOUND FROM FUEL PUMP AFTER HOT ENGINE RESTART - LX MODELS WITH 3.0L ENGINE
FORD:
1990-92 PROBE
ISSUE:
A "gurgling" noise may be heard from the fuel pump in the rear of the vehicle after a hot engine restart. It lasts for about 5-10 seconds. The noise is caused by fuel passing through the return line check valve which causes the rubber check valve to vibrate.
ACTION:
Install a revised check valve to eliminate the noise. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Confirm the noise condition by operating the vehicle until operating temperature is reached, (about 10-15 minutes).
a. Stop the engine and allow it to cool for 15-20 minutes.
b. Restart the engine and listen for the noise coming from the fuel pump/tank area.
c. If the noise is heard, proceed to Step 2.
2. Relieve the fuel pump line pressure.
a. Disconnect the inertia switch.
b. Start the engine and allow it to run until it stalls. This will reduce high pressure fuel loss when the fuel lines are disconnected from the fuel pump.
3. Remove the fuel pump. Refer to the 1992 Probe Service Manual, Section 10-01B, for the removal procedure.
CAUTION:
WHEN REMOVING OR INSTALLING THE FUEL PUMP ASSEMBLY, BE VERY CAREFUL NOT TO RUB, BEND OR DAMAGE THE FUEL PUMP SOCK/FILTER AGAINST THE FUEL TANK OPENING.
4. Position the fuel pump on a clean work surface.
5. Remove the return line check valve retaining clamp and the rubber return line check valve.
6. Slide the existing retainer clamp on the return line and install the new check valve (F32Z-9H318-A) onto the steel return line.
a. Be sure the return line has bottomed out in the check valve.
b. Secure the check valve with the retainer clamp.
NOTE:
THE RETAINER CLAMP "TIPS" MUST BE ROTATED TOWARD THE PUMP MOTOR TO PREVENT CONTACT WITH THE INLET LINE FILTER/SOCK.
NOTE:
SINCE THE NEW FUEL PUMP RETURN LINE CHECK VALVE IS LARGER IN DIAMETER, THE FUEL PUMP RETURN LINE WILL HAVE TO BE BENT TO AVOID CONTACT BETWEEN THE CHECK VALVE AND THE FUEL PUMP SOCK.
7. Very gently bend the fuel pump return line upward, away from the fuel pump sock, 10 mm from its current position. This will prevent the new check valve from contacting the fuel pump sock.
NOTE:
IF THE RETURN LINE IS KINKED DURING THE BENDING PROCESS, REPLACE THE FUEL PUMP (FO2Z-9A407-A).
8. Install the fuel pump assembly into the fuel tank. Refer to the 1992 Probe Service Manual, Section 10-01B, for the installation procedure.
9. Confirm that the inertia switch or fuel pump relay is operational.
10. Before reinstalling the rear seat cushion, start the engine and check for fuel leaks. If no leaks are observed, install the seat cushion and return the vehicle to the customer.
