Timing Cover: Service and Repair

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove crankshaft damper as outlined under CRANKSHAFT.
3. Drain oil, then remove oil pan.
4. Remove timing cover bottom bolts, then lower vehicle.
5. Remove remaining timing cover bolts.
6. Carefully insert a flat bladed screwdriver between timing cover and cylinder block. Pry timing cover from block.
7. Pull timing cover over end of crankshaft, then lower it through engine compartment. Timing cover may be removed with water pump upper hose attached, Fig. 7.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Clean gasket mating surfaces on cylinder block and timing cover.
b. Ensure cover is correctly seated on dowels.
c. Refer to Fig. 8. for bolt tightening sequence. Apply suitable sealant D6AZ-19558-A on threads.
d. Tighten timing cover bolts to specifications.
