Figure 1:
FORD: 1990 PROBE
ISSUE: A broken or worn accessory drive belt may be caused by a chipped crankshaft damper. The damper could show signs of "halfmoon" shaped chips on the front edge of the damper or chips on the grooved surface where the accessory drive belt rides. The damage may have been caused by the tool used to install the crankshaft damper at the time of engine assembly. The only affected model is the Probe LX with a 3.0L EFI engine.
ACTION: Inspect the crankshaft damper for signs of damage to determine if a new crankshaft damper and accessory drive belt is required. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1. Inspect the crankshaft damper for damage, Figure 1. Use the follows steps:
a. Look at the damper from the top of the right hand fender just to the rear of the coolant overflow bottle.
b. Disconnect the ignition coil.
c. With an assistant, rotate (BUMP) the starter by turning the ignition key to the "crank" position and then quickly back to the off position.
d. Repeat Step 1c until the complete damper surface has been inspected.
2. If the crankshaft damper is okay stop here. If the crankshaft damper is damaged, proceed to Step 1 of the removal procedure.
REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. Support the car with a jack stand.
2. Remove the power steering pulley shield.
3. Remove both accessory drive belts.
4. Remove the front right hand wheel and tire assembly.
5. Remove the inner fender well plastic shield.
6. Remove the three (3) number 3 engine mount nuts and tapered spacer from the engine mount attached to the front engine cover.
7. Remove the front bolt and nut from the subframe-to-body on the right hand passenger side of the car.
8. Remove the rear nuts from the subframe-to-body on the right hand passenger side of the car.
9. Remove the crankshaft damper bolt and washer.
10. Remove the crankshaft damper.
NOTE: IT MAY BE NECESSARY TO SLIGHTLY SPRING THE SUBFRAME DOWNWARD TO GAIN ENOUGH CLEARANCE FOR CRANKSHAFT DAMPER REMOVAL.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Apply silicone sealant in the keyway slot of the crankshaft before installing the new crankshaft damper.
2. Install the new crankshaft damper. DO NOT use a hammer to install the crankshaft damper.
3. Install the crankshaft damper washer and retaining bolt. Tighten to a torque of 92-122 lb.ft. (125-165 N-m).
NOTE: IN ORDER TO TIGHTEN THE CRANKSHAFT DAMPER BOLT TO THE CORRECT TORQUE, USE FLANGE HOLDER T78P-4851-A WITH 20 mm LONG SPACERS. THIS TOOL WILL STOP THE CRANKSHAFT FROM TURNING.
4. Install the rear nuts on the subframe-to-body on the right hand passenger side of the car. Tighten to a torque of 68-97 lb.ft. (93-132 N-m).
5. Install the front bolt and nut on the subframe-to-body on the right hand passenger side of the car. Tighten to a torque of 26-40 lb.ft. (36-54 N-m).
6. Install the three (3) number 3 engine mount nuts and tapered spacer on the engine mount attached to the front engine cover. Tighten to a torque of 54-76 lb.ft. (74-103 N-m).
7. Install the inner fender well plastic shield. Tighten to a torque of 6-9 lb.ft. (8-13 N-m).
8. Install the front right hand wheel and tire assembly. Tighten to a torque of 65-87 lb.ft. (88-118 N-m).
9. Re-install the original rear accessory drive belt.
10. Install a new front accessory drive belt, (FO2Z-8620-A for non-A/C equipped units or FO2Z-8620-D for A/C equipped units).
11. Install the power steering pulley shield.
12. Remove the jack stand from the car.
