Cowl - Water Leak On Front Carpet

LEAKS - WATER INTO PASSENGER COMPARTMENT FROM COWL AND "A" PILLAR LOCATIONS
FORD: 1989-90 PROBE
This TSB article is being republished to expand the model year coverage to include 1990 units.
ISSUE: Water may leak into the passenger compartment on the front carpet or stand in the foot well area. This may be caused by sealer skips in the cowl top to cowl side and "A" pillar areas.
ACTION: Seal the cowl top to cowl side and "A" pillar areas with silicone sealer. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Water test the cowl area and note the location of water entry.
2. Remove both windshield wiper arm assemblies. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 35-60-18 for service details.
3. Remove the lower windshield moulding (6 screws and 2 push pins). Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 35-60-1 for service details.
4. Remove the right hand cowl top plastic shield.
5. Raise the headlamp lid and remove the plastic bezel cover held by two (2) screws. Refer to the 1989 Probe Shop Manual, page 32-02-2 for service details.
6. Remove the bolts from the following locations that hold the front fender to the inner fender panel:
^ Along the top of the fender
^ Along the the "A" pillar
^ At the bottom of the fender to the bottom of the cowl
^ Around the wheel opening
7. Lift the rear edge of the fender and pull it outboard.
NOTE: COMPLETE FENDER REMOVAL IS NOT REOUIRED FOR PERFORMING THE RESEALING OPERATION. THE FOLLOWING ILLUSTRATIONS SHOW THE FENDER REMOVED FOR CLARITY ONLY.
8. Position a suitable support between the fender and inner panel to allow clearance to the cowl and "A" pillar seams.
CAUTION: USE CARE WHEN LIFTING AND REPOSITIONING THE FENDER TO AVOID SCRATCHING THE PAINT OR BUCKLING THE SHEET METAL.
9. Check for sealer skips at the water leak locations.
10. Blow dry the areas that require re-sealing with compressed air.

11. Seal seams as required with Ford Clear Silicone Sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA). See Figures 1 through 4 for proper sealer location.
12. Water test to confirm water leak correction.
13. Attach fender as follows:
^ Remove the support from between the fender and inner panel
^ Reposition the fender to the "A" pillar and inner panel
^ Loosely install attaching bolts
^ Align fender to door and hood
^ Tighten bolts
^ Install attaching bolts at bottom of fender to bottom of cowl and around the wheel opening
14. Install the plastic bezel cover to the headlamp bulb assembly with two (2) screws.
15. Install the right hand plastic cowl top shield. Use Ford Clear Silicone Sealer (D6AZ-19562-AA) on the plastic nut that is directly over the heater fresh air inlet opening.
16. Install the windshield lower moulding with six
(6) screws and two (2) push pins.
17. Install both windshield wiper arms.
