^ LOCK - LIFTGATE - KEY STUCK IN LOCK CYLINDER - LOCK LEVER SERVICED SEPARATELY
FORD: 1990-91 PROBE
The lock lever was not previously serviced separately from the lock cylinder. The purpose of this TSB article is to provide a procedure in cases where only the lever requires replacement. This maintains a one key system and does not require replacement of the entire lock cylinder assembly.
ISSUE: The key may get stuck in the liftgate lock cylinder making it impossible to remove. This happens because the liftgate latch lever may bend, the lock cylinder lever is too short, or the lock cylinder is loose in the center tail lamp lens. When this happens, the key becomes wedged in the lock cylinder. On LX and GT models, the interior liftgate lever and cable will still function to open the liftgate.
ACTION: Install a revised liftgate lock cylinder lever. Refer to the following procedure for service details.
1. Determine if the correct liftgate latch has been installed.
Figure 1:
a. Measure the length of the angled portion of the latch lever, Figure 1. It must be approximately 1" (25.4 mm) long.
b. If it is only 3/4" (19.05 mm) long, replace the latch as detailed in TSB 90-8-6.
2. Open the liftgate on LX/GT models by pulling the remote release lever. Proceed to Step 4.
3. Open the liftgate on GL models as follows:
^ Fold the rear seat backs down by pulling up on the release knob and remove the rear package tray.
^ Remove the service hole cover for the liftgate hatch latch in the luggage compartment.
^ Through the latch service hole, move the latch release lever to the left. Use a suitable tool, such as a screwdriver or drift pin.
^ Open the liftgate.
^ Remove all luggage compartment rear trim fasteners, 10 push pins. Remove the trim.

4. Remove the lock cylinder from the center lens, Figures 2 through 5.
5. Remove the retainer clip from the lock cylinder.
6. Remove the lock cylinder lever.
7. Install the assembled lock cylinder into the center lens.
NOTE: INSPECT, TIGHTEN AND REPLACE THE LOCK CYLINDER RETAINER SCREWS IF THEY WERE ORIGINALLY LOOSE, SEE FIGURE 4.
8. Install the center lens, gasket and lock cylinder assembly.
9. Before installing the tail lamps and interior trim pieces, check for the correct operation/adjustment of the latch and lock cylinder.
a. Use the key and, if equipped, the remote liftgate release cable.
b. Adjust as required.
