ISSUE: The key may get stuck in the liftgate lock cylinder making it impossible to remove. This happens because the liftgate latch lever may bend or be out of position allowing the lock cylinder lever to travel beyond the latch lever. When this happens, the key becomes wedged in the lock cylinder.

ACTION: Install a new rear hatch latch assembly. Refer to the following procedure for service details.

1. Open the liftgate on LX/GT models by pulling the remote release lever. Proceed to Step 3.

2. Open the liftgate on GL models as follows:

^ Fold the rear seat backs down by pulling up on the release knob and remove the rear package tray.

^ Remove the service hole cover for the liftgate hatch latch in the luggage compartment.

^ Through the latch service hole, move the latch release lover to the left. Use a suitable tool, such as a screwdriver or drift pin.
^ Open the liftgate.

^ Remove all luggage compartment rear trim fasteners, 10 push pins. Remove the trim.

3. Remove the RH & LH tail lamp lens. Save the tail lamp gaskets for later use.

4. Remove the center applique and lock cylinder assembly. Save the center applique gasket for later use.

5. Install new screws to retain lock cylinder assembly to center applique.

6. Install the center applique and gasket saved in Step 4 to the rear back panel.

7. Install the latch assembly to the rear back panel.

8. On LX/GT models, connect the remote cable and courtesy lamp connectors.

9. Check the operation of the lock cylinder and latch.

NOTE: IF ANY MOISTURE IS INSIDE EITHER TAIL LAMP, REFER TO TSB 90-8-11 FOR SERVICE INSTRUCTIONS.

10. Install the RH & LH tail lamp lens.

11. Install rear luggage compartment trim, 10 push pins and latch cover.

12. Close the liftgate.
