Drivetrain - Front Halfshaft Ting Pop Noise

TING POP NOISE - FRONT HALFSHAFT

FORD:
2011-2013 Explorer

ISSUE
Some 2011-2013 Explorer vehicles may exhibit a noise from the front wheel area when accelerating from a stop or when shifting between drive and reverse. The noise is usually described as a ting or a pop type noise.

ACTION
Follow service procedure to correct the concern.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Separate halfshaft from wheel hub. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM, Section 205-04.

a. Do not remove halfshafts from transmission or power transfer unit (PTU).








2. Install one (1) thrust washer, metal surface first, over the halfshaft splines until the metal ring is flat against the wheel bearing mating surface. The nylon surface should face outward toward the hub/splines. (Figures 1 and 2)

3. Assemble halfshaft to wheel hub. Refer to WSM, Section 205-04.

a. A new ball joint nut and wheel hub nut must be used.
