1.6L GTDI/2.0L GTDI-MIL LIGHT - DTC P1 44C - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 7/18/2012

FORD:
2013 Escape

ISSUE
Some 2013 Escape vehicles built on or before 7/18/2012 and equipped with a 1.6L or 2.0L Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection (GTDI) engine may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P144C stored in powertrain control module memory. This concern may be due to an evaporative emissions vapor ejector installed backwards and/or a blocked vapor purge line port in the air cleaner outlet pipe assembly.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. Remove engine cover for access, if necessary.

2. Disconnect battery ground cable. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 414-01.

3. Inspect vapor ejector installation. Does arrow on vapor ejector indicate proper installation as shown? (Figure 1 or 2)

a. Yes - vapor ejector installation is correct. Proceed to Step 6.

b. No - proceed to Step 4.

4. Loosen the two (2) clamps, remove the bolt (2.0L only) and remove the air intake duct center section. (Figure 3)

5. Replace evaporative emission canister purge valve assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 310-00.

a. Removal of the underbody shield is required on 1.6L GTDI equipped vehicles. Proceed to Step 7.

6. Disconnect evaporative emission vapor purge line from the air intake duct center section. Refer to WSM, Section 310-00. (Figure 3)

7. Insert a plastic tie-strap, at least 4.0 mm (.157 in) wide, into the vapor purge line port on the air intake duct center section to determine if it is blocked by flashing. A slight bend is necessary to pass through the angled port orifice. A 4.0 mm (.157 in) opening is required for proper system operation. Does tie-strap pass easily and completely through vapor purge line port?

a. Yes - proceed to Step 9.

b. No - proceed to Step 8.

8. Replace air cleaner outlet pipe assembly. Tighten clamp and bolt (2.0L only) to 5 N.m (44 lb-in). Proceed to Step 11.

9. Install the air intake duct center section. Tighten all fasteners to 5 N.m (44 lb-in).

10. Connect evaporative emission vapor purge line to air intake duct center section. Refer to WSM, Section 310-00.

11. Connect battery ground cable. Refer to Workshop Manual, Section 414-01.

12. Install engine cover, if previously removed.
