Diagnostic Routine M

Diagnostic Overview

P0710, P0711, P0712, P0713, P1711, P1783

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 29 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

The TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor is located in the transaxle solenoid body. The resistance value of the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor varies with temperature change. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) monitors the voltage drop across the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor to determine the temperature of the transmission fluid. When the ignition is turned to the RUN position, the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) uses this initial input signal to determine whether a cold start shift schedule is necessary. The cold start shift schedule allows delayed shifts when the transmission fluid is cold. This helps warm the transmission fluid. The PCM (Powertrain Control Module) inhibits TCC (Torque Converter Clutch) operation at low transmission fluid temperatures and adjusts line pressure to temperature.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Pinpoint Test

NOTE: If the scan tool is unable to communicate with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) or access the transmission PIDs (Parameter Identifications), REFER to Computers and Control Systems Information.

1. Read and record all DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

1. Install the scan tool and record all DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).

Were DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) P0710, P0711, P0712, P0713, P1711 and/or P1783 set?

2. Check the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor circuit for an open and short to ground

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect the transaxle vehicle harness C168.

3. Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

4. Ignition ON.

5. Access the TFT and TFTV PIDs.

Does the TFT PID display a temperature of -40 C (-39.9 F) and the TFTV PID display 4.9 volts?

3. Check the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor circuit for voltage

1. Measure for voltage between the transaxle vehicle harness C168-2 and ground.

Is the voltage greater than 4.8 volts?

4. Check the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor for a short to ground

1. Measure the resistance between the transaxle internal harness terminal 2 and ground component side.

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

5. Check the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor for an open

1. Measure the resistance between the transaxle internal harness terminal 2 and terminal 3 component side.

Temperature to Resistance

Do the temperature to resistance specifications match?

6. Check the TFT (Transmission Fluid Temperature) sensor circuit voltage

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect the transaxle vehicle harness C168.

3. Inspect the connector for damaged or pushed out terminals, corrosion, loose wires and missing or damaged seals.

4. Ignition ON.

5. Measure for voltage between the transaxle vehicle harness C168-2 and C168-3.

Is the voltage greater than 4.0 volts?
