Engine Controls - MIL ON/DTC's P1289/P1290 Set
TSB 11-9-132.0L GTDI - MIL WITH DTC P1289 AND/OR P1290 - BUILT ON OR BEFORE 8/17/2011

ISSUE
Some 2012 Explorer vehicles equipped with a 2.0L gasoline turbocharged direct injection (GTDI) engine and built on or before 8/17/2011 may exhibit a malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on with diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P1289 cylinder head temperature (CHI) sensor circuit high and/or P1290 CHI sensor circuit low stored in powertrain control module (PCM) memory.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Reprogram the PCM and transmission control module (1CM) to the latest calibration using IDS release 74.05 and higher or 75.01 and higher. This new calibration is not included in the VCM 2011.9 DVD. Calibration files may also be obtained at the website.
2. Follow WSM, Section 307-01 General Procedures and perform Solenoid Body Strategy Drive Cycle.
NOTE
PLEASE ADVISE THE CUSTOMER THAT THIS VEHICLE IS EQUIPPED WITH AN ADAPTIVE TRANSMISSION SHIFT STRATEGY WHICH ALLOWS THE VEHICLE'S COMPUTER TO LEARN THE TRANSMISSION'S UNIQUE PARAMETERS AND IMPROVE SHIFT QUALITY. WHEN THE ADAPTIVE STRATEGY IS RESET, THE COMPUTER WILL BEGIN A RE-LEARNING PROCESS. THIS RE-LEARNING PROCESS MAY RESULT IN FIRMER THAN NORMAL UPSHIFTS AND DOWNSHIFTS FOR SEVERAL DAYS.
