Diagnostic Overview
The Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator Is Never or Always On
Normal Operation and Fault Conditions
NOTE: If DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0140:00 sets in the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster), other observable symptoms can be an inoperative speedometer, tachometer or odometer.
REFER to Charging System Message Center Warning Indicator .
If the charging system status message is missing for less than 5 seconds, the charging system message center warning indicator remains in the last indication state (on or off) based on the last known good message received.
If the charging system status message is missing for 5 seconds or longer, the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) sets DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0140:00 in continuous memory and defaults the charging system message center warning indicator on.
Pinpoint Test
1. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) SELF-TEST
1. Using a scan tool, perform the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) KOEO (Key ON Engine OFF) self-test.
Are any charging system DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?
2. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE BCM (Body Control Module) SELF-TEST
1. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM (Body Control Module) self-test.
Are any charging system DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) recorded?
3. CHECK THE CHARGING SYSTEM OPERATION
1. Check the charging system operation.
Does the charging system operate correctly?
4. RETRIEVE THE RECORDED DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) SELF-TEST
1. Using a scan tool, perform the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) self-test.
Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) U0140:00 recorded?
5. CHECK THE MESSAGE CENTER WARNING INDICATOR FUNCTION
1. Ignition OFF.
2. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C175B (3.5L).
3. Disconnect: PCM (Powertrain Control Module) C1381B (2.0L GTDI (Gasoline Turbocharged Direct Injection)).
4. Ignition ON.
5. Observe the message center or integrated display area of the IPC (Instrument Panel Cluster) with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) connected and disconnected.
NOTE: If multiple warnings are present, the message center cycles through each of the warning indicators. Allow the message center to cycle through each display while determining whether the charging system message center warning indicator is active.
Do the powertrain malfunction (wrench) and engine over-temperature warning message center indicators remain off when the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) is connected and become active with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) disconnected?
