Diagnostic Routine E

Diagnostic Overview

The Steering Wheel Switch Illumination Is Inoperative

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 71 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operation and Fault Conditions

REFER to Dimmable Backlighting .

Pinpoint Test

1. CHECK OTHER NON-NETWORK DIMMABLE LIGHTING SOURCES

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Place the headlamp switch in the parking lamps on position.

3. Using the instrument panel dimmer switch, change the dimmable backlighting to its brightest setting.

Are all non-networked dimmable backlighting sources inoperative?








2. CHECK THE HORN OPERATION

1. Push the driver air bag against the steering wheel to activate the horn.

Does the horn sound?








3. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL BACKLIGHTING VOLTAGE SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: Lower Clockspring C218A.

2. Measure:





Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?








4. CHECK THE STEERING WHEEL AND HARNESS

1. Connect: Lower Clockspring C218A.

2. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module .

3. Disconnect: Upper Clockspring C218B.

4. Connect: Battery Ground Cable.

5. Place the headlamp switch in the parking lamps on position.

6. Using the instrument panel dimmer switch, change the dimmable backlighting to its brightest setting.

7. Measure:





Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?








5. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE AND GROUND TO THE STEERING WHEEL SWITCH

1. Remove the driver air bag module. REFER to Driver Air Bag Module .

2. Disconnect: Suspect Steering Wheel Switch.

3. Connect: Battery Ground Cable.

4. Place the headlamp switch in the parking lamps on position.

5. Measure:





Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?
