Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Keyless entry keypad

Pinpoint Test

1. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD ILLUMINATION

1. Touch the keyless entry keypad in several places.

Do the keypad numbers illuminate?

2. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD INDICATOR

1. Touch the keyless entry keypad in several places.

Does the round indicator on the top of the keypad light up?

3. CHECK FOR VOLTAGE TO THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad.

3. Measure:

Is the voltage greater than 11 volts?

4. CHECK THE KEYPAD GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

5. CHECK THE BCM (Body Control Module) KEYPAD CODE

1. Using a scan tool, view BCM (Body Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Observe the BCM (Body Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications) (KEYCODE_1stD, KEYCODE_2ndD, KEYCODE_3rdD, KEYCODE_4thD, and KEYCODE_5thD).

3. Read and record the 5-digit factory set entry code.

4. Enter the 5-digit factory set entry code on the keyless entry keypad.

Do the doors unlock?

6. RETRIEVE THE BCM (Body Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM (Body Control Module) self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B121B:01 recorded?

7. REPEAT THE BCM (Body Control Module) SELF-TEST

1. Disconnect: Keyless Entry Keypad.

2. Using a scan tool, clear the BCM (Body Control Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes)

3. Using a scan tool, perform the BCM (Body Control Module) self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B121B:01 recorded?

8. CHECK THE KEYPAD INPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280C.

3. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

9. CHECK THE BCM (Body Control Module) KEYPAD PIDs (Parameter Identifications)

1. Using a scan tool, view BCM (Body Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Press each keyless entry keypad button while observing the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) (KYPD_BTN_1/2, KYPD_BTN_3/4, KYPD_BTN_5/6, KYPD_BTN_7/8, and KYPD_BTN_9/0).

Do the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) display active when the corresponding button is pressed?

10. CHECK THE KEYLESS ENTRY KEYPAD

1. Using a scan tool, view the BCM (Body Control Module) PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. Monitor the keyless entry keypad PID (Parameter Identification) KYPD_BTN_1/2.

3. Connect a fused jumper wire:

4. Monitor the keyless entry keypad PID (Parameter Identification) KYPD_BTN_7/8.

5. Connect a fused jumper wire:

6. Monitor the keyless entry keypad PID (Parameter Identification) KYPD_BTN_9/0.

7. Connect a fused jumper wire:

Do the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) display active when the jumper wire is connected?

11. CHECK THE KEYPAD INPUT CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

1. Disconnect: BCM (Body Control Module) C2280C.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

12. CHECK THE KEYPAD INPUT CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO EACH OTHER

1. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

13. CHECK FOR CORRECT BCM (Body Control Module) OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect all BCM (Body Control Module) connectors.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins- install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins- install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect all BCM (Body Control Module) connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
