Diagnostic Overview

The Intelligent Access (IA) Feature Is Inoperative From A Front Door

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 117 for schematic and connector information Electrical Diagrams.

Normal Operations and Fault Conditions

REFER to Driver Door Intelligent Access (IA) and REFER to Passenger Door Intelligent Access (IA) for information on the operation of the IA (Intelligent Access) feature.

DTC Fault Trigger Conditions

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Exterior front door handles

- IA (Intelligent Access) key

Pinpoint Test

NOTE: The IA (Intelligent Access) feature is a programmable parameter and can be enabled/disabled with a scan tool. If the feature is disabled, the IA (Intelligent Access) feature to enter the vehicle and passive starting will be inoperative. To start the vehicle, the IA (Intelligent Access) key has to be placed in the backup slot.

1. CHECK THE RKE (Remote Keyless Entry) OPERATION

1. Press the unlock button on an IA (Intelligent Access) key.

Does the driver door unlock?

2. CHECK THE DOOR LOCK OPERATION

1. Lock and unlock the doors using a door lock control switch.

Do the doors lock and unlock?

3. CHECK THE IA (Intelligent Access) KEY

1. Place the IA (Intelligent Access) key on the center console and start the engine.

Does the engine start?

4. CHECK THE IA (Intelligent Access) LOCK AND UNLOCK CAPACITIVE SENSOR PIDs (Parameter Identifications)

1. Using a scan tool, view RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications).

2. NOTE: When monitoring the capacitive sensor PIDs (Parameter Identifications), it is best to select a graph view. When a sensor is touched, the PID (Parameter Identification) state rapidly switches between ON and OFF for approximately 2 seconds.
Touch both the lock and unlock sensors on the suspect exterior door handle while monitoring the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module PIDs (Parameter Identifications) LF_HNDL_LK, LF_HNDL_UNLK, RF_HNDL_LK, and RF_HNDL_UNLK.

Do the PIDs (Parameter Identifications) indicate that the sensors are being touched?

5. CHECK THE RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE SELF-TEST

1. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B1381:11 or B1382:11 present?

6. CHECK THE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLES FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Disconnect: LH (Left Hand) Front Exterior Door Handle (DTC B1381:11).

2. Disconnect: RH (Right Hand) Front Exterior Door Handle (DTC B1382:11).

3. Using a scan tool, clear the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).

4. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B1381:11 or B1382:11 present?

7. CHECK THE LOCK AND UNLOCK CAPACITIVE SENSOR INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: RFA Module C2153D.

3. Measure:

Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms?

8. CHECK THE EXTERIOR DOOR HANDLE

1. Disconnect: Suspect Front Exterior Door Handle.

2. Connect a fused jumper wire:

3. Using a scan tool, perform the RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module self-test.

Is DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) B1381:11 or B1382:11 present with the jumper wire connected?

9. CHECK THE LOCK AND UNLOCK CAPACITIVE SENSOR INPUT CIRCUIT FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153D.

3. Ignition ON.

4. Measure:

Is any voltage present?

10. CHECK THE LOCK AND UNLOCK CAPACITIVE SENSOR INPUT CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

11. CHECK THE LOCK AND UNLOCK CAPACITIVE SENSOR GROUND CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Is the resistance less than 3 ohms?

12. CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA

1. Disconnect: Suspect Front Exterior Door Handle.

2. Measure:

Is the resistance between 1 and 10 ohms?

13. CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO VOLTAGE

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect: RFA (Remote Function Actuator) Module C2153A.

3. Ignition ON.

4. Measure:

Is any voltage present?

14. CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA CIRCUITS FOR A SHORT TO GROUND

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Measure:

Are the resistances greater than 10,000 ohms?

15. CHECK THE EXTERNAL ANTENNA CIRCUITS FOR AN OPEN

1. Measure:

Are the resistances less than 3 ohms?

16. CHECK FOR CORRECT RFA (Remote Function Actuator) MODULE OPERATION

1. Ignition OFF.

2. Disconnect and inspect all RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module connectors.

3. Repair:

- corrosion (install new connector or terminals- clean module pins)
- damaged or bent pins- install new terminals/pins
- pushed-out pins- install new pins as necessary

4. Reconnect all RFA (Remote Function Actuator) module connectors. Make sure they seat and latch correctly.

5. Operate the system and determine if the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
