Diagnostic Overview

The Power Liftgate Does Not Power Open (Power Close Ok)

Normal Operations and Fault Conditions

If the power liftgate is in the closed position and the conditions are correct, the LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) supplies voltage to the unlatch/cinching motor to unlatch the liftgate from the striker. Once the liftgate is unlatched, it supplies voltage to the motor to open the liftgate. As the liftgate is moving in the open direction, the LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) monitors the position sensor for door speed to detect obstacles. If the LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) determines that the latch does not unlatch or the power liftgate does not move once it is unlatched, it aborts the power open operation.

Visual Inspection and Diagnostic Pre-checks

- Liftgate alignment

- Liftgate striker alignment

- Mechanical binding

Pinpoint Test

1. RETRIEVE THE DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) FROM THE LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module)

1. Using a scan tool, perform the LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) self-test.

Are any LTM (Liftgate/Trunk Module) DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes) present?

2. CHECK THE MANUAL OPERATION OF THE LIFTGATE

1. Ignition ON.

2. Turn the power liftgate off (disable) from the message center.

3. NOTE: A small amount of interference during a manual operation will be amplified during a power operation and may cause the liftgate to not power open.
Manually unlatch the liftgate. REFER to Liftgate Latch Manual Release .

Does the liftgate unlatch correctly?

3. CHECK THE MANUAL OPERATION OF THE LIFTGATE

1. While manually opening and closing the liftgate, check the liftgate for:

- liftgate/wedge alignment
- strut operation (struts should push liftgate open when beyond half open)
- hinges (should move freely)

Does the liftgate open and close correctly?

4. CHECK THE LIFTGATE LATCH AND STRIKER ALIGNMENT

1. NOTE: Make sure to inspect the underside of the striker bridge for witness marks.
Inspect the striker and latch for correct alignment.

Is the latch and striker aligned correctly?
