Removal
NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket surfaces that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
1. Remove the RH (Right Hand) ignition coils. REFER to Ignition Coil-On-Plug - RH .
2. Remove the PCV crankcase vent tube.
3. Remove the engine wiring harness from the RH (Right Hand) valve cover.
- Disconnect the 2 VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid electrical connectors.
- Detach and disconnect the RH (Right Hand) CMS (Catalyst Monitor Sensor) electrical connector.
- Disconnect the 3 fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Disconnect the CHT (Cylinder Head Temperature) sensor wiring harness jumper electrical connector.
- Detach the 9 wiring harness retainers from the RH (Right Hand) valve cover and stud bolts and position the harness aside.
4. NOTICE: When removing valve cover do not apply excessive force to the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid.
NOTICE: If the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) solenoid seal sticks to the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid, then carefully wiggle the valve cover until the bond breaks free.
NOTE: The plastic electrical connector on the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid will rotate approximately 12 degrees inside the steel housing, which is normal.
Loosen the 11 retainers and remove the valve cover.
- Discard the gasket.
5. Inspect the 2 VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) solenoid seals. Remove any damaged seals.
- Using 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) remove and discard the damaged seal(s).
6. Inspect the spark plug tube seals. Remove any damaged seals.
- Using 303-1247/1 and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) remove and discard the damaged seal(s).
7. Clean the valve cover, cylinder head and engine front cover sealing surfaces using Motorcraft(R) Metal Surface Prep.
Installation
1. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.
Using 303-1247/2 and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) install the new spark plug tube seal(s).
2. NOTE: Installation of new seals is only required if damaged seals were removed.
Using 205-142 (T80T-4000-J) and 205-153 (T80T-4000-W) install the new VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) seal(s).
3. NOTICE: Failure to use Motorcraft(R) High Performance Engine RTV Silicone may cause the engine oil to foam excessively and result in serious engine damage.
NOTE: If the valve cover is not installed and the fasteners tightened within 4 minutes, the sealant must be removed and the sealing area cleaned. To clean the sealing area, use Motorcraft(R) Silicone Gasket Remover and Motorcraft(R) Metal Surface Prep. Failure to follow this procedure can cause future oil leakage.
Apply an 8 mm (0.315 in) bead of Motorcraft(R) High Performance Engine RTV Silicone to the engine front cover-to- RH (Right Hand) cylinder head joints.
4. Using a new gasket, install the RH (Right Hand) valve cover and tighten the 11 retainers.
- Tighten in the sequence shown to 10 Nm (89 lb-in).
5. Ensure the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) seals in the valve cover are below the top of the connector (flat portion) on the VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control valve otherwise the interface may leak.
6. Install the engine wiring harness to the RH (Right Hand) valve cover.
- Position the wiring harness and attach the 9 wiring harness retainers to the RH (Right Hand) valve cover and stud bolts.
- Connect the CHT (Cylinder Head Temperature) sensor wiring harness jumper electrical connector.
- Connect the 3 fuel injector electrical connectors.
- Connect and attach the RH (Right Hand) CMS (Catalyst Monitor Sensor) electrical connector.
- Connect the 2 VCT (Variable Camshaft Timing) oil control solenoid electrical connectors.
7. Install the PCV crankcase vent tube.
8. Install the RH (Right Hand) ignition coils. REFER to Ignition Coil-On-Plug - RH .
