Pinpoint Test A: The Wipers are Inoperative - Windshield

Refer to Wiring Diagram Set 81, Wipers and Washers for schematic and connector information. Diagrams By Number

Normal Operation

Under normal operation, the windshield wiper relay receives power at all times through circuit SBB20 (GN/RD). When the key is in the RUN or ACC position, the windshield wiper relay receives power from the Smart Junction Box (SJB) through circuit CBP10 (YE/OG). The windshield wiper relay is grounded at all times through circuit GD120 (BK/GN). When the windshield wiper relay is activated, the front windshield wiper motor receives power through circuit CRW03 (VT/WH). The front windshield wiper motor is grounded through circuits GD108 (BK/VT) and GD120 (BK/GN). The multifunction switch is grounded through circuit GD145 (BK/BU). The front windshield wiper motor receives open and ground inputs from the multifunction switch through circuits CRW17 (GN/VT), CRW18 (VT/WH), CRW19 (BU/OG) and CRW08 (VT/OG) to activate the wipers to the appropriate modes.

This pinpoint test is intended to diagnose the following:
- Fuse(s)
- Windshield wiper relay
- Wiring, terminals or connectors
- Multifunction switch
- Windshield wiper motor

PINPOINT TEST A: THE WIPERS ARE INOPERATIVE - WINDSHIELD

-------------------------------------------------
A1 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW03 (VT/WH) FOR VOLTAGE

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Motor C125.
- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between windshield wiper motor C125-5, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper motor C125-8, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side and ground.

- Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?

Yes
GO to A5.

No
GO to A2.

-------------------------------------------------
A2 CHECK CIRCUIT CRW03 (VT/WH) FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.
- Disconnect: Windshield Wiper Relay.
- Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-5, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side and windshield wiper relay pin 5, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side; and between windshield wiper motor C125-8, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side and windshield wiper relay pin 5, circuit CRW03 (VT/WH), harness side.

- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to A3.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A3 CHECK CIRCUIT GD120 (BK/GN) FOR AN OPEN

- Measure the resistance between windshield wiper relay pin 2, circuit GD120 (BK/GN), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to A4.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A4 CHECK CIRCUITS SBB20 (GN/RD) AND CBP10 (YE/OG) FOR VOLTAGE

- Ignition ON.
- Measure the voltage between windshield wiper relay pin 1, circuit CBP10 (YE/OG), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper relay pin 3, circuit SBB20 (GN/RD), harness side and ground.

- Are the voltages greater than 10 volts?

Yes
INSTALL a new windshield wiper relay. TEST the system for normal operation.

No
VERIFY Battery Junction Box (BJB) fuse 20 (30A) and SJB fuse 10 (5A) are OK. If OK, REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. If not OK, REFER to the Wiring Diagrams to identify the possible cause of the circuit short. TEST the system for normal operation. Diagrams By Number

-------------------------------------------------
A5 CHECK CIRCUITS GD120 (BK/GN) AND GD108 (BK/VT) FOR AN OPEN

- Ignition OFF.
- Measure the resistance between windshield wiper motor C125-6, circuit GD120 (BK/GN), harness side and ground; and between windshield wiper motor C125-3, circuit GD108 (BK/VT), harness side and ground.

- Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to A6.

No
REPAIR the circuit(s) in question. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A6 CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

- Disconnect: Multifunction Switch C202.
- Carry out the Multifunction Switch Component Test.

- Did the multifunction switch pass the component test?

Yes
GO to A7.

No
INSTALL a new multifunction switch. REFER to Steering Column.

-------------------------------------------------
A7 CHECK CIRCUIT GD145 (BK/BU) FOR AN OPEN

- Measure the resistance between multifunction switch C202-15, circuit GD145 (BK/BU), harness side and ground.

- Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?

Yes
GO to A8.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A8 CHECK FOR SHORTS IN THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR HARNESS

- Measure the resistance at windshield wiper motor C125, harness side, between the circuits shown in the following chart.

- Is the resistance greater than 10,000 ohms for all measurements?

Yes
GO to A9.

No
REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

-------------------------------------------------
A9 CHECK FOR CORRECT WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR OPERATION

- Disconnect all windshield wiper motor connectors.
- Check for:
- corrosion.
- pushed-out pins.
- Connect all the windshield wiper motor connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
- Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
- Is the concern still present?

Yes
INSTALL a new windshield wiper motor. REFER to Wiper Motor - Windshield Wiper Motor - Windshield.

No
The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. TEST the system for normal operation.
