Removal

Transmission - Four Wheel Drive (4WD)

1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Vehicle Jacking and Lifting.

2. NOTE: When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms can occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. Notify the customer that they can experience slightly different upshifts either (soft or firm) and that this is a temporary condition and will eventually return to normal operating condition.

Disconnect the battery ground cable.

3. Remove the coolant expansion tank bolts and position the tank aside.

4. Remove the fan shroud bolts. Do not remove the fan shroud.

5. If transmission disassembly or installation of a new transmission is necessary, drain the transmission fluid.
- Install the drain plug when finished.

6. If equipped, remove the 4 skid plate bolts and the skid plate.

7. Remove the 2 RH heat shield bolts and position the RH heat shield aside.

8. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.

Disconnect the 2 Heated Oxygen Sensor (HO2S) connectors.

9. NOTE: LH side shown, RH side similar.

Disconnect the 2 Catalyst Monitor Sensor (CMS) connectors.

10. Remove the LH exhaust heat shield bolt.

11. If equipped, remove the RH exhaust heat shield.

12. Remove the catalytic converter-to-muffler nuts and bolts. Separate the muffler from the converter.
- Discard the gasket.

- Discard the nuts.

13. NOTE: RH side shown, LH similar.

Remove the 4 catalytic converter-to-manifold nuts.

14. Install a suitable jackstand under the transfer case.

15. Remove the 4 RH side crossmember bolts and the crossmember nut.

16. Remove the 4 LH side crossmember bolts and the crossmember nut.

17. Remove the transmission support insulator-to-crossmember nuts and remove the crossmember.

18. NOTE: This step may require an assistant.

Remove the 3-way catalytic converter system.

19. NOTE: LH side shown, RH similar.

If required, remove the transmission support insulator.

20. Remove the selector lever cable shield by prying on the side of the selector lever cable shield closest to the Transmission Range (TR) sensor connector boot, then sliding the selector lever cable shield away from the TR sensor connector boot.

21. NOTICE: To prevent selector lever cable damage, do not apply force to the selector lever cable between the manual control lever and the selector lever cable bracket.

Remove the selector lever cable and selector lever cable bracket.

22. Remove the driveshafts. For additional information, refer to Drive/Propeller Shafts, Bearings and Joints.

23. Remove the ground cable nut and position the cable aside.

24. Remove the starter and position to the side.

25. NOTICE: Rotating the crankshaft pulley bolt counterclockwise could cause a reduction in clamp load on the crankshaft pulley and timing sprocket, which could cause severe engine damage.

NOTE: Make an identifying mark on the nut, stud and flexplate to allow for correct installation.

Remove and discard the 4 torque converter-to-flexplate nuts.

26. Remove the lower transmission-to-engine bolts.

27. Lower the transmission to gain access to the sensor connectors and the transmission-to-engine bolts.

28. Remove the RH CMS connector and the fuel lines from the bracket.

29. Remove the RH HO2S from the transmission.

30. If equipped, disconnect the transfer case shift motor connector.

31. Remove the LH HO2S and the harness clip from the transmission.

32. Remove the LH CMS connector from the transmission.

33. Disconnect the Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor, Output Shaft Speed (OSS) sensor and intermediate shaft speed sensor connectors.

34. NOTE: Clean the area around the transmission vehicle harness connector to prevent contamination of the transmission control solenoid vehicle harness connector.

Disconnect the transmission vehicle harness connector.

35. Move the TR sensor connector boot back to gain access to the TR sensor connector.

36. Disconnect the TR sensor connector.

37. Remove the transmission vehicle harness retainers from the transmission.

38. NOTICE: Do not damage the transmission fluid cooler tubes. Hold the transmission case fittings with a backup wrench.

Disconnect the 2 transmission fluid cooler tube nut-to-case fitting.

39. WARNING: Secure the assembly to the jack. Avoid any obstructions while lowering and raising the jack. Contact with obstructions may cause the assembly to fall off the jack, which may result in serious personal injury.

Support the transmission with a transmission jack.

40. Remove the jackstand from under the transfer case.

41. Remove the 6 transmission-to-engine bolts and position the fuel line bracket aside.

42. Move the transmission back enough to install the Torque Converter Retainer.

43. Lower the transmission and transfer case (as an assembly) from the vehicle.

44. Remove the Torque Converter Retainer.

45. NOTE: If the transmission is being serviced, the transfer case will need to be removed.

Remove the transfer case from the back of the transmission.

- Remove the transfer case bolts and the bracket.

- Disconnect the vent hose.

46. If the transmission is being disassembled to install new parts, or if a new or remanufactured transmission is being installed, the transmission fluid cooler, the auxiliary transmission fluid cooler (if equipped) and the transmission fluid cooler tubes must be cleaned and backflushed to keep contaminants from entering the transmission. For additional information, refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning Transmission Fluid Cooler Backflushing and Cleaning.
